just tried posting this in the dvdxcopy forum, but it must be a violation of rules i didnt know about or something.... so i'm reposting it here...
i like dvdxcopy and the simple way it copies disks and keeps the menus etc..... but a ton of my stuff is in the form of episodic disks..... and if you've been following the developement of dvdxcopy the past few months, it is just total Cr*p at doing episodic disks atm..... they keep promising each update will fix most of the issues.... yet 3 updates and 3 months later practically nothing has been fixed
frustrated at not being able to backup some of my stuff.... I spy and dark shadows etc...... i kept looking for SIMPLE ways of copying the disks without reencoding..... and ifoedit finally provided a simple answer (i had been off track with it the first month or so i tried.... i was not creating the ifos i was fixing them and that made problems for me
so anyways... a simple procedure that so far has worked for all my disks is as follows-
1- rip your original disk with smartripper or dvddecrypter, rip in file mode and rip files. (should take less than 10 minutes if you have a decent lite-on or other 16x reader)
2- look in that dir you made and delete everything but the vobs. then divide the vobs into 2 under 4.3gb dirs (ie put the first 2-4 vobs in its own dir and the rest into another dir) then rename the vobs VTS_01_1.VOB and VTS_01_2.VOB etc in EACH of these dirs
3- then load up ifoedit , hit create ifos then browse and pick the VTS_01_1.VOB from the first dir and cerate the ifos (make output same as original vob loaction) (should take 5 minutes tops)
4- i then open up the newly created VTS_01_0.IFO in that dir and hit get vts sectors and then hit save (this step might be skipable but i do it anyways to correct any lower case i might have done in renaming etc)
thats it then just burn with nero (another 28 minutes if yer 2x burnin)
so about 45 minutes for the first disk in total and 30 or so for the 2nd one..... less total if the original disk isnt maxing out the dvd9 space....
to do episodics rip each episode with smart ripper (NOT dvddecrypter) and rename etc like above ussually 2 per disk is what fits)
(oh yea you do loose the menus etc but not any of the extras at least not in any disks i have done)

How do you do this when the VOB ID's are only 2 for PGC 2 (first episode) and 3 for PGC 3 (second episode)? This episodic stuff is a true nightmare!

I disagree
Smartripper 2.41
DVD2One v1.11 (must be this version)
Nero 5.5.9.9.
In DVD2One select FULL-DISK and...Bob's your Uncle & Fanny's your Aunt !: ]-~

Okay. I've finally been able to isolate two episodes of my Miss Marple disk (1:44 each). I used IFOEdit and stripped them. I then created new IFO's. Then went in and opened the new IFO I created, told it to correct original IFO files. It plays perfectly with Power DVD, but Gear only burns the VIDEO_TS file and ignores everything I did. Any suggestions?

This is kinda wacky. Nero, although only letting me burn at 1x on my Pioneer A05 4x recorder using 2x disks, writes perfectly. How do I fix it so Nero recognizes my 4x drive at 2x at least?

herbsman,
yea you can do that but episodic dvds are maxed out ussually at 7+ gigs and when compressed even with awesome dvd2one the results are less than satisfactory...
i use dvd2one if the movie is 5.7 gigs or smaller... more than that and the blockiness on my hdtv gets too annoying :(
re vob ids.....
i am not too technical at all this but so far i have totally ignored vob ids etc and just ripped, renamed and created the ifos.... works on everything so far....
tho again i nust say dvddecrypter doesnt work as well for the episodics as smartripper does.... no idea why

Hmm ,
You have a point although I've only done a few episode discs.
1/ Friends (all of series 9) - 131 to 136mins
2/ Blackadder Goes Forth (around 6Gb originally if I remember rightly)
I don't have HDTV , I believe I may get a bit more fussy as to loss of quality I'm not yet seeing if I was to update my current 28" TV.
(I'll have to write a note to santa stating which Plasma screen I'd like)

yea when you get a hdtv you will be sorry :(
for the sake of this thread and your comments i just tried again with a I SPy disk i have (7.23 gb!) i used dvd2one and ripped the whole disk..... then took the last episode from the dvd2one rip and a smart ripper rip of the same episode and burnt a dvdrw to test upstairs....
and via my toshiba progressive scan dvd player fed to my mitsubishi 55in hdtv i did a bunch of tests....
and it is just unacceptable at that size/progressive scan....... solid colors ripple ever so slightly and a sort of pulsing blurry/non blurry effect can happen on details.....
i just cant live with the result :(
tho again under 5.6 gb i am pretty happy with dvd2one... episodic disks are not a good test of the programs abilities :) :(
so for me anyways.... tho it takes 2 disks (it actually takes less time tho) i am gonna stick with my hand made create ifos way.... at5 least until dvdxcopy gets its act in gear :(
