Hi Guys,

I just managed to destroy my old PS2. The cable which goes between the FOXCONN and the mainboard literally burnt out. Instead of the fuses going, it cooked the insulation. I put it on the bench and found that a bunch of resistors weren't resisting anymore and that the fuses were all giving about 1ohmz resistance, which is way out of spec. Bye bye, old friend. One of the results of the insulation cooking off is that it fouled my Ghost Recon 2 disc. While the game is not spectacular, I did enjoy it. The smell was fantastic.

I went to ebgames and got lucky. Someone had just traded in a PlayStation 2 Slim ("PStwo" as I've seen it lurking here) and I bought it with a warranty for the used system price. Sweet!

Checking the forums, I haven't seen a really great comparison between HD Advance and Swap Magic. It's obviously time to invest in one of these as cleaning the fouling off the GR disc resulted in a disc that looks fine to me and my PC, but the PSTwo is taking forever to read it. It hasn't done this with any other games, so I'm pretty sure the disc is on it's way out also. Swap Magic has a bundle with the tools for cheap a few places, but the idea of using a spare hard drive from my junk pile on the PSTwo is interesting. Any HD Advance gurus here know if the PSTwo can accept a USB hard drive? Also, if I see fit to copy my DVD games to DVD-Rs, will HDAdvance run them off the DVD-Rs or do I need to copy them to the hard drive first?

Are there other programs aside of HD Advance and Swap Magic which are preferred? Is there a Big Matrix of Features Between Mod Programs I can look at?

Thanks,
Josh

Yes the ps2 slim can use an external hard drive running usb extreme. It will not wear your laser down and the games run much faster than they do running by disk. But the downside of using an external hard drive is it's not as compatible with games as it is with swap magic disks and it skips on cutscenes. But you can use another method called hd connect which is compatible with a lot more games and doesn't skip on cutscenes. To learn more about hd connect search on google or here.

ps3 with 20gb hard drive

xbox 360 premium edtion with vga/hd hook up to my dell 20.1 inch widescreen lcd.

White and black 1.5 psp's

I'll take this down WHEN micro$oft decides to stop being lazy and make the capcom fighting games backwards compatible with the 360 dammit!!!

The HD Connect is a bit invasive from what I've been looking for. I'm basically trying to keep the PSTwo intact until the warranty expires or it starts acting weird. Or I break down and buy a PS3 and the PSTwo becomes expendable.

This is an SCPH-7500x unit, which has the metal bar Sony added making the Swap Magic keys a pain.

Does anyone have pictures of the inside of this unit? Would it be acceptable to carefully drill out the metal bars for the sake of making room for the swap key?

Thanks again.

I use HD advance 3.0 with by v5 and so far its been great.
(Its always played the cut-scenes for me, maybe because its v3.0)
There are games that will not work with HD advance that will work with magic swap. What I don't like is that you can not play backup disks with HD advance (you can copy it to the HD, but if it wont run from the HD its pointless). If they added a way to play the games from the DVD after the swap it would be perfect.

If you don't mind that some game wont work (or need fixing), I would go with the HDD because of the speed and its easy to load the HDD.

If you want better compatibility with games go with Magic swap.

Or go with both for the best of both worlds (swap only when you need to, personally I'm getting a chip.... I'm too old for swapping)
