PS2 not reading dvds!

I am having problems with my ps2, it will no longer play dvd's, and it has a hard time playing the original play station games. My assumption is bad hardware, but before i go and spend money i thought i would ask all of you what you think because i have seen you guys pull off some tricky stuff!!! Thank You.

Your laser is bad. Try adjusting it or cleaning it. If all else fails buy one off of ebay.

is it chipped? My previous matrix infinity was bung and had your exact problem with official games and Movies. Any dvd wouldnt work
