I have a quick question. I have no problem backing up but when I recently watched several movies there seemed to be a slight skip during the films. I have always used Verbatim and Sony discs in the past but recently bought Memorex(because of a sale). Could it be the discs or is it something more, like my burner or reader is dirty?

It sounds like your disc. Memorex is a bad quality. Do not buy them or use them. They will end up being coasters. I do not think you will find anybody on this site that recommends Memorex.

Thanks, I thought that might be the problem. I screwed myself, I probably used 25 of the 50 I bought but only watched like four of the movies. I guess I'll get my suprise later when I watch the rest. I'm sticking to my Sony and Verb. discs.

Verbatim DVD-R usually codes as MCC, but recently some have gotten CMC coded Verbatims from Sams Club. Were, these DVD+R or -R and were they 8x or 16x? Does anybody know? I am trying to pin down which of the Verbs turned out to be CMC.

I'm pretty sure that the verbatim cmags are in the dash format and in the 4x speed.

Same with the Maxell dash format from taiwan.4x for sure, probably 8x dash media as well. I know a few members from up in Canada that have gotten a hold of the cmag maxells with very poor results.

Made in Taiwan:
Cmags-HP/Memosux/TDK/Philips/Teon/
prodisc
Ritek
Verbatim
Sony-08D1/04D1/SonyD11
FujiFilm

I'll take the verbatim +8x/sony 8x-either format/Maxell plus-any speed/Fuji-Made in Japan/and the riteks.

TonyK:

When those issues occur: Are they on the pc-using the same drive that burned them,or a stand alone player?

I know for a fact, that some of those picky stand alone players are the usual culprit when it comes to those playback issues. They will pick out the quality difference between your media.

Try viewing some of the older backups that are on sony or verbatim and see if they are ok. After time, wear and tear on a stand alone can show those issues.

Here's a few things to try so you can try to get through the rest of those memosux:
Slower burn speed
Reduced backup target.I use 4360 mbs as mine, but some of the crappy media may have to be reduced to 4300 mbs.

I was watching on a stand alone. I usually burn at 4x. How do you change mbs?

If you have a lot of issues towards the end of your backups, then the reduced target will help.

If they are randomly throughout your backup, reducing that backup target will increase compression. Compressed backups-on poor quality media, can also be a problem. Some of those stand alones can pick out the quality differences between MID coded media.

Dvd shrink-which a lot of us use:
Edit/preferences/click dvd-r/scroll till custom/enter 4300/OK

Other programs, ????
