ripping w/external dvd burner vs. internal

Sometimes ripping stops before completed. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason. If movie rips w/out stopping and completes successfully, I have no problem burning it.

It seems like most other posts have problems w/burning but not the ripping. Have heard the suggestion that it's perhaps due to my external "Plextor 740UF" burner.

Why would that be a possibility? Can anyone enlighten me? And IF it is most likely the reason, anyone able to give me a work-around for this (big) inconvenience? Other than installing an internal burner,as this one was just received in October as a gift and cost quite a bit, AND I've no room internally to install one! (without taking out components I'm not willing to live without!)

i have a sony DRX-810UL external burner and i dont have issues with ripping or burning. have you checked for a firmware update?

It's only been on the market since September 2005, so they said there are none for it yet.
