Avi file plays music but voice sound is real quiet.

Does anyone know why if I play some *.avi files that I can here the sound effects and music fine, but the voices of the movie characters is real low. Like you have to turn the volume up all the way just to hear the people talking. And when the volume is up all the way, you can barely hear them. Is it because I am missing a codec? GSPOT tells me that I have 2 audio codecs for the *.avi file.
