Poor quality burns on Sony TYs(DVD+R)?

I've been backing up my HDD by burning all my data as data ISO's (as DVD-ROM) and it seems I've been getting some pretty bad quality burns.

Currently, I have my DVD burner in an external shell casing connected by firewire, would that have any effect in this case?

So is there any remedy to this situation? like updating the burner's firmware or placing the drive inside the computer? If the quality of the media is not the problem, then something must be wrong on the hardware end...
