four things:
1. i heard there were some complications with the scph 75001 model and the swap magic discs v3.6. is this true?
2. what dvd burner would you suggest purchasing for backing up ps2 games?
3. with the swap magic setup, will i ever be able to back up and play dvd9(dual layer) games?
4. and lastly, what type of media should i use for the dvds?
thanks a ton!

Swap Magic 3.6 works with all games no problem with v14/v15.
I would get a LITE-ON burner it supports Booktyping which makes games easier to read for the PS2s laser.
No DVD-9 games wont work with Swap Magic but within the week of the game coming out they usally have DVD-9 to DVD-5 anyways.
The best media brands are: TDK,Verbatim, or Tiayo Yuden
v7 w/ Crystal Chip 1.1, Boot Manager 1.8, and HD Loader v0.7c w/ 80 GB HD
v7 w/ DMS4 Pro and Toxic OS .41 w/ 200 GB HD

If you have the money, go with a quality modchip like the DMS 4 Pro SE or Matrix Infinity. With those you can burn games and play them just by inserting them in the PS2 disc tray, just like originals. A chip is more expensive, but the features make it worthwhile. There's no swapping, you can make a straight burn with DVD-9 games to Dual Layer Media, play PAL games perfectly on an NTSC PS2/TV or vice versa, play multi disc games like originals, play all your PSX backups/imports like originals, support loading games off an external HD, elf files off the MC, cheat devices like ARMAX and Game Shark, and emulator's like PGen and Snes Station. They also make your PS2 a region free DVD player. A quality chip blows Swap Magic away. You're looking at $100 for a quality chip, installation, and, shipping. Use quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. You can get good deals on them at http://www.supermediastore.com
5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1. The DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader built into the flash and all the feature's you'd expect from a quality modchip, I recommend the DMS 4 SE Pro, because it has a 2MB flash built into the chip, and it's only about $10 more than the DMS 4 SE Lite. If you're interested in playing games off a HD, take a look at the DMS 4 Pro SE.
http://www.dms3.com/dms4se/features.html
The Matrix Infinity is the grandfather of auto boot modchips. It was the first modchip to auto boot backups/imports with no swapping/resetting. It's feature packed and simple to use. Matrix Chips are probably a little more durable than the other two, and extremely reliable. There are a lot of Matrix Infinity clones out there, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers listed in this thread.
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=chip_infinity
The Crystal Chip 1.1 is the latest contender to graduate to the top flight chip category. It is feature packed, simple to use, and effective. The CC auto patches DNA ID's so you'd never need to bother with Windip, Winimage, or Disc ID Insertor. Definitely recommended if you play your backups online alot. To boot backups/imports the Crystal Chip requires the use of "hacked" firmware. It's simply the official firmware modified so the chip can boot backups and imports. Everyone who uses the CC uses the hacked firmware, so fear not. The only feature that the CC doesn't share with the other two chips is support for cheat devices like ARMAX or Game Shark.
http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2#31 CC 1.1 Hacked Firmware v.19: http://www.forumconsolas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1213
I personally have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. I have no regrets as to getting a modchip over Swap Magic. Once you have a quality modchip, you'll never go back to disc swapping again. It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like. If you haven't noticed, most people who have trouble getting games to boot are Swap Magic users. This isn't nearly as frequent a problem for people who have modchips. Just some food for thought.
Note: v.12-14 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.
From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:
If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12-V14 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.
Laser fix info: http://www.modchip.com/ps2/v12laserfix.htm
26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition http://www.modchip.com and http://www.norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable. http://www.Xmodds.com is another quality mod site. If you're interested in a premod or modchip, be sure to order from one of these high quality sites.

i went with swap magic. the flip top isn't designed to well. it took me a long time to figure out that i need to keep the bottom right of it (by the power button) pressed down with some tape, for it to work.
has anybody used the slim KIT pro? i'm thinking of getting it for my cousins. does it work just as well as the flip top? the instructions say that you may need to cut the "gab" on tool C for newer models. has anybody had problems with the Kit for slim ps2?

Either should work fine. Just make sure you order the right one for your version PS2. You could try the tape and tissue mod:
Tape and Tissue mod: From Pretense: If the fliptop doesn't work, just give up on it and do a tape and tissue mod. Open up your case again and tape the back sensor (toward the upper left and beneath the hinge part of the lid) with duct tape or even regular Scotch tape (I use several layers to be on the safe side), put the case back together, and stuff a small ball of tissue into the hole for the front sensor (lower right just above the power button).
Pics (Thanks to PSPness): http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm my tape and more tape
Just about the same, just a change on Censor 'A' and Censor 'B'
Censor B - http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/572/dsc010703xc.jpg keep the top closed, while you tape down the disk stopper, using a few layers of duct tape
Fur
Censor A - http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/4342/dsc010698we.jpg use tiny strips of duct tape to patch over the tiny censor. I used a screwdriver to help put on the tape.

Eh fat PS2 flip tops aren't that nice. I had one and it was terrible. There are a couple sites that sell good ones, but a lot of them are very shabbily made.
