I have used DVD Decrypter to obtain VOBs from a TV recording on a DVD+RW disc made on my standalone DVD Recorder. Ideally I would like to edit them and put them onto DVD+R disc, but failing this, burn them as they are to DVD+R using Nero or Ulead Movie Factory.

What I don't understand is the authoring process i.e. it seems to me that both of these programs transcode the VOB files to MPEG2 and then burn. Am I right or are the VOBs burned directly onto disc?

The reason I ask is because if they need to be in MPEG2 format for burning, I may aswell use something like Vegas to edit the VOBs, then encode to MPEG2 and use the resulting file to burn to disc.

Can anyone advise me on this? I am confused.

VOB and MPEG-2 are the Same Format(VOB Files Just have different TimeCode Info)....When you author a DVD Compliant MPEG-2 file or VOB files to DVD the Files doesn"t get re-encoded so Going from MPEG-2 to VOB doesn"t require any Compression at all.....

The Reason why you can"t just Burn a MPEG-2 or VOB file to a DVD has nothing really to do with the Video files but it has to do with Createing the Navigation Perameters and TimeCode and Chapter Information ect which is Stored in the IFO and BUP files so the Most Important Part of the Authoring Process is the Creating and Formating of the IFO and BUP files so that they Properly Corespond with the Video Files...

If you want to edit your VOB/Mpeg-2 files you should Not Use Vegas Video because Vegas Video will require you to re-encode the Files when rendering which Takes a Long Time and Lowers the Quality...

If you want to do Proper Frame Accurate Editing of Vob/Mpeg-2 files then you should use a Native Mpeg editor Like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" or for more advanced Editing "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" which will allow you to edit your VOB/Mpeg-2 files and even add some effects and Transitions all without re-encodeing the whole File and without Lowering the Quality and it only takes a Few Minutes to render your Project as Opposed to many hours with other encoders and editors....

These editors will save your Project as a MPEG-2 file which you simply Load into your DVD authoring Program and add your Menu"s and Chapters and Burn it to DVD......
