hi crouch,
welcome to AD and you are NOT a moron~ :)
we all have to start somewhere...so, let's start out with the basics..
what model/type of dvd burner do you currently have? this will determine whether the DVD-R format or the DVD+R format is better suited for your burning needs...
in terms of TY's rated speed, they are all made within the guidelines of being the highest quality, so, it's just a matter of preference which ones you should use...
i have MANY of all different rated speeds and formats, no ONE type is "better" than the next...
if your drive is booktype capable, meaning has the ability to make DVD+R into dvd-rom, then i would suggest DVD+R media booktyped to dvd-rom to ensure the highest compatibility among your stand alone dvd players...
if your drive is NOT capable of booktyping/bitsetting, then i would recommend going with the DVD-R format as that is the NEXT in line in terms of compatibility w/ standalones~ :)
need a few more bits of info from you and i can help you along your way in making an educated decision.

well, i need to know a bit more than that...do you know who manufacturers the drive? (brand/company name) and the model number (should be on the box that you purchased it in assuming you bought it retail) :)
your drive could be quite a few different ones, despite being external...is it a Plextor, Pioneer, Benq, Sony, Liteon, Nec, etc?

@henryting
sorry, i do not even own an external drive, all of my various burners are internal, so, i'm not very experienced in that dept... :)
@crouch57
i don't know who is the ACTUAL manufacturer for that noorwood micro drive, i never even heard of that company before to be honest with you... :) but, when in doubt, i would suggest using the DVD-R format since at this point, we don't know if your drive is booktype-able...stick with the 4x or 8x DVD-R Taiyo Yudens...TYGO1s/TYG02s as the 16x DVD-R TYG03s MIGHT not be recognized if the firmware is lacking for your particular external drive...
that is my only suggestion at this moment until we can figure out WHO actually manufacturers that drive...whether it's a rebadged Liteon, Benq, Nec, etc... :)

well, from that info...here is my suggestion:
Taiyo Yuden
get either the DVD-R OR DVD+R format, i would strongly suggest NOT getting the 16x rated discs as your firmware might not be up to date as to write to them properly...
so, with that in mind...get the 4x DVD-R or 8x DVD-R, or the 8x DVD+R Taiyo Yudens..you SHOULD be ok with those 3...chances are GOOD that you will be able to burn onto them with no problems...anything HIGHER in rated speed, ie. 16x rated, you might run into some issues~ due to firmware of course...:)
hope that makes your decision a little easier for you..

:) your welcome~
i get MOST of my Taiyo Yuden media directly from Taiyo Yuden here in North America, but i have a business partnership with them as they do NOT sell to the general public...
but, before i acquired this partnership, i bought almost ALL of my Taiyo Yuden media from www.supermediastore.com :)
here is a direct link to what i was suggesting to you before:
http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-matt...
this is the most inexpensive BY FAR and i have thousands of these, however, they MIGHT send you the 8x TYG02s for the price of the 4x TYG01s here...i know i received the 8x dvd-r on my last purchase from them...you might even get the 16x rated dvd-r TYG03s...which MAY or MAY NOT be compatible with your external drive depending on how current your firmware is for it...so, it's a toss up... :)
http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-me...
here is the link for the actual TYG02s above ^^ , this way you know exactly what you are getting for money paid...i don't know how many you need/want, so that is the link for the 8x dvd-r in various quantities...
finally, here is the 8x dvd+r , it's more expensive, but at least you know what you will be getting...OR you could read around the local sales we have up here every week to see if you can get Taiyo Yuden made discs under various brands (Fuji/Sony 8x dvd+r MIJ) in a store near you...
http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-plus...
there ya go...good luck~

if i went to the store, most likely only the 8x DVD-R or 8x DVD+R is available (and the new 16x rated ones too, but those are NOT Taiyo Yudens in the stores locally)..the 4x rated speeds are becoming harder and harder to find...they are not widely available anymore... :)
so, in stores, stick with the 8x rated ones...
