I have these DVDrs brand GQ(greatQuality). Now this media is known to be really really bad. They are usually made from CMCmag, Must, etc. Its the Frys electronics store brand. anyhow I had a 50pk of the
DVD-R and I ran DVD identifier on them and they coded out as:
** INFO : Disc = [DVD-R:MCC 02RG20 ]
now I know that MCC is really good media but I had really bad problems with them. about half of them were coasters. to give you an idea how bad they were. I have better luck with Memorex CMCmags.
Now a friend gave me another 50pk of them and these coded out as :
** INFO : Disc = [DVD-R:TYG02].
That is Taiyo Yuden 1st class media. I have a funny feeling that these are not the real deal. You can get a 50pk of those GQ's for about $8-10. I know that there is something fishy about this could it be that these discs are supposedly Fake discs or could my identifier programs lying to me (DVD Identifier, Nero). how can i tell if they are fake? If anyone has similar problems please post a reply. sorry about typing so much but it was a long story. Thanks to all that reply

What you need to do is look at the innermost hub on the disc ... you know, the clear part. There you will find some tiny little numbers and letters ... do what you can do to read them and post what you find. Then we'll get Dr Ty on the case ... he'll be able to tell you if you scored or crapped out

i got a funny feeling they are FAKES...#1 hint: those GQs are made in taiwan, i have NEVER seen GQs made in japan, EVEr~! :)
#2 hint: if they are REAL Taiyo Yudens, they will be MADE IN JAPAN, no if's and or but's~ :)
#3 lastly, the inner hub reading...being TYG02s, you WILL find something along this line "GG000XXX" where XXX is the batch number of when they were made if they are genuine, if you do not see that coding, you got yourself some FAKES~ :)

Sooo Doc ... are they made in Japan by Taiwanese slave labor? Or maybe made in Taiwan by Japanese scab labor ... or are they really made in Japan by Japanese workers ... or maybe made in Japan by midwestern college students workung on student visas in exchange for a few sips from the old opium pipe ...

Just a thought (the medication's working)

I have a 25 pack of the GQ 8x DVD-R. They scanned as Sony and the inner hub code is DRM5G80001, it also has the bar code on the inner hub just like the Sonys I just picked up at Staples last week. I was told by one of the higher ups at Frys that these are the real thing but may be seconds, defects or over surplus from the suppliers. I also purchased GQ CD-R and they show up as Sony. It is probably a crap shoot and luck of the draw. I may never find them again. They have burned good with no coasters.

consider yourself VERY luck to find Sony coded media under the GQ brand...as you said, might never happen again... :)

Sony's own coded media is quite good, it's surprising to see at least ONE member getting "better" stuff than the norm when buying GQ or anything from Fry's Electronics for that matter~ :)

i have a bad taste with Fry's personally, bought a supposedly "new" cpu and mobo combo from them a few years back...the cpu was OEM (meaning 1 year warranty) and the mobo was a damn refurbished unit~! missing the clip that seats the heatsink/fan...so, i'm very weary about buying ANYTHING Fry's has for sale as their own "special combo" or sales...naturally, i returned my REFURBISHED crap to them and got my money back...the fact they advertised it as "NEW" and sold a refurbished/used product is VERY shady...shady enough that if enough people reported, could put a hurting on their sales...i filed my complaint already with the BBB~ :)

just be careful...in MY opinion, it's not worth the crap shoot to TRY to get the Sony media under the GQ brand, chances are you WILL NOT get them...luck of the draw for you dilligaf9 :P

@meltstorm

hi buddy, yeah, the MIJ Fuji 8x in either format are most likely Taiyo Yudens, i love those 30-pack colored ones..but, yes check them out when you have the chance and confirm for me that they are indeed STILL the TYs; you just never know nowadays with companies changing manufacturers and such, good luck :) next time i'm in the area, will check it out myself~ :)

So I picked up a pack of Frys GQ's and in DVD Identifier they show up as DVD+R:SONY-D11-000 for Unique Disc Identifier and for media ID D11 and Manufactuar they show up as SONY. Does this mean that these are acually the good quality GQ's?

Most of the media that companies like GQ market are 'B' and 'C' grade stuff that manufacturers like Sony refuse to put their name on, but don't want to scrap

Stick with the name brand media - there's a reason that ultra cheap discs are ultra cheap ...

be careful with your HP media as well my friend, they ALSO use CMC MAGs as their manufacturer on SOME of their media~ :)

HP DVD-R 4.7GB CMC MAG. AE1 8x

HP DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.E01 8x

HP DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.F01 4x

HP DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.R01 2.4x

HP DVD+R 4.7GB PHILIPS.C08 8x (philips media is CRAP)

HP DVD+R 4.7GB PHILIPS.C16 16x (crap at higher speeds)

HP DVD+RW 4.7GB CMC MAG.W01 2.4x

i think you catch my drift... HP is NOT a reliable brand to go by for good quality discs...

docTy~

edit, my bad, i read your reply a little too fast, i didn't notice until now that you put HP alongside Memorex for CMC MAG...hahahaha..but, there is ur lesson on HP media nevertheless~ :)
