Garbled Audio in VirtualDub

I have avi files that I uploaded from a JVC digital camera to my computer. I uploaded them using Ulead VideoStudio 8 Editor. The capture settings were set to DV.

Previously, when I used my camera to convert and upload my old analog tapes, I successfully split them into smaller avi files using VirtualDub 1.6.11. However, with my newer footage, if I upload a whole tape straight and then want to split it into smaller segments to back up on DVDs, I run into a problem with VirtualDub. Everthing comes out with completely garbled static audio.

I am using Direct Stream Processing for both audio and video in VirtualDub. The large files (10-15 GB) play fine after they are captured and before I run them through VirtualDub. I have tried changing settings in VirtualDub, and I have tried downloading later versions (1.6.12, 1.6.4). None of this seems to help.

Should I be capturing using different settings? Is there something that I can change in VirtualDub? Does anyone have a suggestion of another program that will enable me to split large avi files into multiple files?
