When you modify a slimline PS2 (v12) then you must add this small pcb which limits the current to the coils of the laser. It happens very often that the v12 Laser completely burns up after just one or two hours of gameplay. By adding this fix you can feel yoursef on the safe side after modding the nice small PS2 v12. With just 5 solderpoints you solder this PCB directly to the mainboard of the v12 PS2, no wires required.

I just bought my PS2 yesterday from Best Buy. I'm pretty sure I have V14. Do I still need a laser fix?

Our brand new ps2's are either v13 or v14. Both of them do not require
any kind
of a laser fix, as Sony fixed those issues after the v12. You will get
a brand
new Sony controller and all of the necessary cords with your brand new
premodded system. We offer a 60 day warranty on everything we mod, we fix
everything for free w/in that period. 99.9% of the time people do not
have any
problems with their ps2's. And yes, we test every console before we send it
out.

If you are interested fill out a premod form and our installer David will get
back to you with more information.

Thanks,

according to the noob thread:

From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:

If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12-V14 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.

hmmmmm

teammodders are pro modders too

I have a v12 ps2, with swap magic 3.6.

I've had it for over a year playing original games, and no problems. During the april of 2005 I left it running for almost 2 days straight, so I never had to restart the Challenge of the Gods in God Of War. It got pretty hot, but never broke and no problems are evident.

I've been using swap magic, Verbatim DVD-R (which get ~99 score from Nero cd/dvd speed) for over a month now, and my backups run flawlessly. I was just wondering if i should be concerned with my laser dying, being v12 and all.

Thanks in advance,
-Hobo

The V12 was really the only one that needed a laser fix.
The only reason to buy one would be if you pan to install a mod chip.
Then i still don't think you NEED it, but it would surely be worth the extra $10 to get it installed while you were doing the modchip
just to be extra safe.
