both brands (Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim) Feature archival quality AZO metal dye.so YES the Verbatim are as good as the Taiyo Yuden. so if you find a good deal on the Verbatim go for it

I think it's all about consistency... Verbatim faltered once with 4X media by using CMC, and Taiyo Yuden has consistently been top-notch. Verbatim learned their lesson (I hope). Both are 1st class now! That being said, use either with confidence. Personally, TY remains tops for me!!!

To be honest, I can't comment on this one simply because I have not used any Verbatim TY combo yet. I would love to get them in the future though. On the other hand, I've used tons (hundreds and hundreds, a thousand) of genuine Taiyo Yuden media flawlessly. Believe it or not, YUDEN has never let me down, it still remains the top dog in regards to media.
However, I know for a fact that my buddy creaky has been using them top notch Verbatim TY for ages. I'm sure he can verify that for you in query to its dye. In addition, even if I haven't used it, but I'm sure it's as great as the famous Taiyo Yuden.

I guess you can call it marketing.
Example: lets say I'm looking to purchase either a Nissan Skyline GTR R34 or a Nissan Silvia S15 (both 2002), the S15 is $30K and the R34 is $65K, now I think I may end up with the Silvia S15 instead simply because they're both fast, smooth and it sure has strong quality. However, that's only my opinion.

sorry, i didn't fully answer the original question..i'm certainly no TY whizz but the Verb TY are manufactured in Japan, shipped in bulk to China and labelled then packed in smaller spindles/jewel cases. Thus origin may often state China (sorry lifted some of that last line from a cdfreaks link).
i've been using them since September - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/229523

If they really are genuine Tys, it doesn't matter what country of origin is slapped on the label, they are going to be great stuff! They have never let me down either. I like the Verbs also, but the Tys get a slightly higher approval rating from me. One of these days, we in the US will get ahold of some of those Verb/Tys, best of both worlds. :) Hell, the US imports everything else from China,, why can't we get the same stuff as the UK??? I mean look, UK, a small island type landmass in the Atlantic,, US Huge chunk of land in Atlantic and Pacific.. WTF??? I know bigger isn't always better, no offense UKers, i was born there myself, dual citizenship and all that.. Maybe some big company here in the US can pay creaky enough money to ship them Verb/Tys to the US, and hopefully the big company, and creaky, will not add too much to the shipping and handling costs..:)

Quote: VERBATIM DYE TY the same same as original TY ?
i'm afraid only creaky will be able to answer this question as i too live in the U.S. and these Verbatim labelled, manufactured by Taiyo Yuden discs are NOT YET available over here~ :)
i would just have to ASSUME that the dye used is the same as the original TY in your initial question...
from creaky telling me about these "sexy discs" he uses, i have validated that they ARE IN FACT, genuine Taiyo Yuden discs...the only difference that i know of is that the top is "branded" Verbatim~ :)
so, if you can get your hands on some...then definitely get them...and since they're cheaper than the original TYs as you mentioned, all the power to ya~! good luck
