I would jump for joy if someone on this forum had the above reciever and knew the configurations inside and out and could give me some experienced advice.
First of all, the AVR 240 is a reasonably high-end amplifier from what I know that should have a moderate level of user-friendliness once configured. If I'm wrong - let me know.
Question:
This is a 7.1 unit, but most ditigal audio sources are either DD5.1, DD.51EX or DTS5.1
How do we configure the unit to split the two rears channel into four to make use of the other 2 speakers in my system? Is this a reasonable solution with this amplifier?
Thanks for the feedback.

are you trying to set up the system for 7.1 then?
assuming you are, you should have a section in the back that says side surrounds and rear surrounds.. your rear channels, in a sense are your 4 channels you are looking for.
i have a yammy rx-v1500 that has the same configuration. you also need to go into the on screen menu and enable 7 channel or 5 channel setting.
i was interested in that unit, but the power was not that impressive to me, so i went with the yammy..

Thanks for the feedback, but it wasn't what I am after. I want reciever-specifics on how to do this.
I AM after 7.1 - everyone that buys a 7.1 reciever is, but decoding the 2 rear channels into 4 isn't true 7.1, it is a hardware function only.
I want to keep all original center and front 5.1 channels and split only the rears.
(Split the rears...sounds dirty)
Thanks.

then you'll have to run them (speakers) in series... but i think you will be sure to over load the amp... ohms wise..
i assume you know how a series circuit is run then...?
positive to negative, negative to positive, on to the next speaker, same sequence...
unless you bi-wired the speakers in series, but then your defeating the purpose..
if you dont mind me asking, why do you want to do this type set up anyway?

What would you recommend?

well, do you have some good quality speakers to go with that AVR?
i'd just run your normal 7 speakers with sub, tune them to your liking, and you should be set..
room accoustics play major roles, so do speakers and set up. does'nt that h/k have a room mic ?

I do not have a HK but rather a 6.1 Yamaha. Now for movies that are produced in 5.1 my receiver will split the signal between the 2 rears and thus make a blend for the 6th speaker....I am sure the HK would do something along these lines as well. There are only a handful of 6.1 movies...It will be nice when movies are produced in 7.1...

no shit you guys - you have only repeated what I said originally.
I am asking HOW to set up this configuration on my HK, I am quite familiar with the concept - so please quit repeating it over and over again.

Brad,
I'm not sure but it is possible that your receiver has only 5.1 output? I'm not really familiar with your HK but if I remember correctly a while back they build receivers with 7.1 processors with only 5.1 channel amps thus requiering an additional stereo amp to produce true 7.1 sound. Now if you go the split the 2 rear channels you still have only 5.1 sound regardless of the number of speakers hooked up. Meaning that those 2 channels will have the same processing.
