Hi all,

Well, first off, I do know how to use Shrink and have been using it for some time now. I do remove the ADS but I do like to keep my Extras. What I need to know is... When using "Custom Compression" Settings, is it better to have a bigger or smaller "movie" file size? I don't care if the extras are not in great quality.

Thanks for any replies! :)

U want to keep the entire disc to 4300mb. Try not to go below 60% compression on the movie itself. If you do go that low do a deep scan for better quality.

Or you could do dual layer discs or split the movie and the extras onto 2 sep discs.

It's better to keep the main movie as low on compression as possible. In other words if you keep menus and extras compress them more using custom compression so the main movie is not compressed as much.

4300MB is best, if you go to far to the edge you get playback problems, and trust me 100 extra MBs isn't gonna do much for quality. I have to disagree w/ unolord though. I say anything under 100% compression warrents a deep analysis. ANything under 60% probably needs AEC options on.

Agreed on advanced analysis being used if any compression is required and I would also recommend AEC on anything requiring more than 75% compression. I'm for quality all the way and really don't care about speed but then again I use dvd-rb pro/cce basic for 99% of my backups. With top notch media you can get by ok setting the target size to 4400 mb. Rb's default target size is 4430 give or take a couple mb and I never have any playback issues with my verbatim dvd+r's booktyped dvd-rom.

Dvd rebuilder is the best without spending a shedload of money. You can get the free beta vs with installer in my sig. The installer includes HC encoder by Hanks and is comparable to cinema craft encoder (cce) basic just not quite as fast. After you have used it a bit I recommend upgrading to the pro vs ($25 donation) to benefit from the added features and then maybe CCE basic ($58).

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I try to keep my Disc size down. I usually watch the Green indicatior bar on top and bring it down a hair to where I see just a little bit of grey space. I've started doing that because when I didn't, I was not able to make another copy from the first backup. It would tell me that there was not enough space on the destination disc.

So, Basically, I need to try to keep the main movie file(s) at 60% or higher right?

Yes. For shrink I wouldn't even go that low on compression period. I would loose the menu and extras or use a better app to transcode/encode.

OK, what's a better program that works like Shrink? I know the Recode is the same.

One that is popular, user friendly, and provides good results is clonedvd 2. You will need anydvd with it. They are both made by slysoft and can be purchased at a discounted price if bought togather.
Dvd rebuilder/cinema craft encoder or hc encoder by hanks are about the best you can get without spending $2000 or more. You will most likely still need anydvd and dvd decrypter or dvd fab decrypter to rip the original to your hdd. You can get the rebuilder beta vs installer for free and it comes with hc encoder bundled in. Link is in my sig.

Although recode 2 is written by the same author as dvd shrink, it is a little better imho.

Well right now I'm using DVDremake Pro to edit my backups in order to do a complete removal of all trailers. Then using Shrink to reencode. Does this DVD Rebuilder "shrink and re-encode" as well?

Yes, rb/cce or hc is actually an encoder that is better than transcoder apps such as shrink, recode, and dvdclone. It also compresses files/folders to fit on a DVD5 it just provides better video quality especially on projects that require higher compression. You can't get much better than rebuilder used with CCE, hc or procoder. Rb/cce is about all I use anymore and I can't see much video quality quality loss if any on my 52" HDTV even on folders compressed over 60%.

You're on the right track using remake, now all you need is rb/cce or hc encoder to make the best quality backup without spending $2000.

axlman,
Mort is absolutely right on this. Just to add to his comments here is what I do. First off I never shrink to less then 85% (actually very-very rarely), otherwise just use a dl media. I like to keep as much of the original quality as possible, beyond that amount I can tell the difference with my setup. Second, always using good media I set my target size to 4400MB, sometime I dare to go all the way. Third, even though I have DVDRebuilder and even CCE Pro, I just use Nero instead of Shrink, better quality and is faster also.

Ok, well thanks guys for all your help! I think that I'll go and try Nero Recode again. Maybe someday I'll give this DVDRB a look see. Never really had any quality issues with Shrink though.

Thanks again!
