I'm new to dvd burners and was wondering what brands are the best. I want the burner mainly to transfer tivo recorded content and to transfer it to disc. What are my options.

Most members have their own preferences, mine being the BenQ Burners such as the BenQ1640, 1650 or the 1655.

just to add to what my buddy is saying...
it really depends on what you like and the media you use..
everyone will give you different opinions as to whats the best...

but so far, the top names would be...
sony, benq, lite-on, pioneer and nec ! and most of these are rebadged from one to another...

BenQ makes drives for Sony and Plaxtor anong others ... The DW1640 was the 'Editor's Choice' in a great number of reviews, and is considered to be the very best at reading damaged discs... However, it is hard to find now. The BenQ DW1650 is an updated version of the DW1640 using the same chipset and will be available sometime in February ...

I own BenQ, Plextor, NEC, LiteOn, Pioneer, LiteOn, Ricoh and HP drives ... the best?? BenQ all the way. I'm awaiting the DW1650's release and will replace my Ricoh with oun

Anyone who doesn't say that BenQ is the best, has never used one

texasflud,
Plextor and NEC are good burners, although Plextor is a bit pricey and DVD burners only seem to last shortly after the one-year warranty expires. So I say don't spend $120 for a Plextor which will buy you 3 NECs at Newegg.com. Check here for daily specials and follow the reviews, not the meaningless star ratings.

At this point, you should get one that will burn dual-layer DVDs too.
