If this is for your personal use and you've have good luck with -R media without any compatibility issues then just stick with good media.

Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim are two quality media's.

If it works for you, then it is the "best" format, whatever you use.

Thanks for the replies. I really want to ensure future compatability, so in 10 years time, when i buy a new player they will still work!!! Is this still the best format?

In ten years they will work if you keep your current players!

Better check out the link/forum below if you are looking at ten years down the road.

I'd say Taiyo Yuden or Sony media. Both burn great for me in my 16x Plextor 716-A burner even though I never go over 8x. Other brands may be OK too but whatever you do don't buy house brands or Memorex! Stay away from HP & Khypermedia as well...

Depending on whether or not your dvdrw drive is capable of bitsetting and also if you plan to share your backups with family and friends and want the greatest chances of compatability, I would use some good quality dvd+r's and booktype them dvd-rom. Dvd+r's booktyped dvd-rom will most likely play in your set top players too. Dvd-rom is the most compatable format. My 2 pennies.

-R seems to work in every set top player I've put them in. But I'd agree that +R booktyped to DVD-ROM works great too.

For maximum compatibility on all set tops, DVD+ booktyped to DVD-ROM. They even play on Grandma's first generation DVD player. :)

Dvd-rom is the most compatable format followed by DVD-R then DVD+R. Most newer stand alone dvd players will play all three. Since DVD+R is the only one that can be booktyped to dvd-rom I would try them first. If they wont play in your player and your dvdrw drive is not capable of bitsetting then try some dvd-r's. DVD+R has the better technology of the two also. Here's an interesting read. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/113 And here's a couple more. http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46559

Obviously DVD+R is the way to go if they are compatable with your set top player or your dvdrw is capable of bitsetting.

Most Compatible is a bought pressed DVD-ROM.

DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM is not a DVD-ROM, it fools the dvd player into thinking that it is a DVD-ROM by writing to the disc (DVD+R) to change the read strategy of the player.

Many have found on older players and older PS2 (which don't read DVD+R well) this has had the best results (certainly a vast improvement on DVD+R)

Its been my experience that there's very little difference in top quality media

either DVD-R

or

DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM

DVD+R on the otherhand has several compatabilty issues on older players.
