Hi all,

In advance, thanks for all the assistance!!

Problem, I recently purchased an external 16x DVD burner and external 100 G hard drive, both to be used with my laptop (Win2000 OS).

Burner is a Pioneer 110D -- I am using a USB 2.0 connection to connect to my laptop and the burner is connected to the external enclosure via an ADA connection!

Hard drive is a Maxtor 100 G 7200 rpm 8MB CACHE connected to my laptop via a USB 2.0 connection with an ADA connection to the enclosure.

Problem - I recently downloaded DVDShrink 3.2 and Nero 7 to be able to back up my DVD's. I am trying to rip the DVD to my new hard drive wich I was able to do, but it took approx 2 1/2 hours to do so. DVD is now on my laptop, but when I try to burn it to a 16x +r blank DVD it starts to burn, but only at 4x and then about 10-15% into the burn the drive just kicks open and the burn fails.

Any suggestions as to why this is happening and as to how I can improve the optimization of the burner (both ripping and burning)?

Thanks again for help regarding these issues!!

make sure you have the latest firmware updates for your burner.
Second, never burn faster than 4x. at 16x your more likely to have failed burns and even if it did burn. chances are the quality will be very poor

Thanks Enrage,

But the reason I purchased the 16x burner is to be able to burn faster! Isn't there any other ways around this! As far as the firmware, how do I check that??

Thanks
Shawn

allensh,
Firmware from your manufacturers website or you can look at rpc1.org.
Some other members with the same drive might give you other pointers.
Your rip and decrypt time depends on the power of your laptop, so the 2 1/2 hours could be reasonable.
You also should look into other solutions instead of DVDShrink.
Also make sure to use good quality media, it looks like your drive and media don't like each other. Firmware update might take care of it but again use good media.
As far as burning speed is concerned, slow it down to 4X until you work out your quirks and become more experienced.
Last but not the least go ahead and do some search on this forum and read the guides.
