ASPI layer?

Ok, everyone was talking about having to install a ASPI layer before being able to rip or burn DVDs. I have windows XP pro. (corp.) and have ripped and burned my first 4 dvds without ever installing a ASPI driver. All 4 movies work on my home DVD player and my powerDVD. Why is this? What are the drawbacks? I have been using DVDdecrypter, for ripping. dvd95copy, for repacking, and nero for the final burning. I just installed smartripper to see what i could do and it poped up saying "no ASPI layer found". So whats the deal? why can i do a complete copy without this layer, using the other methods? Thanks

You can, just not as fast as with an ASPI Layer, XP translates to commands instead, which slows down everything.

Not to mention programs like VCDEasy or TSCV or commandline based propably won't work on your system at all without the ASPI Layer.
