Ok so i have like 2-3 hundredish dvds that i have backed up over the past few months, and i used to play them on my xbox till i realized i was getting too many problems (freezing, glitching etc) so i bought a dvd player, thats pretty nice. So then things were going smooth, but now i notice that i am getting errors some of the time, and sometimes i just have try again and again to get the movie playing (something wrong with the title screen or something), or just glitches or w/e. I am thinking it could be that 85% of my dvds are backed up with memorex. I am thinking of switching to another media and i have a few questions. What media should i switch to? Where do i get this media for cheap? (or as cheap as i can get good media) Can i rip the files off the messed up dvds i have or do i need to dig out the originals? Thanks

If you want to walk into a store anf buy discs ... get Verbatim ... Best Buy has 'em on sale all the time for $14.99/50 .. in fact, through the 28th they're on sale

or, if you wanna go the on-line way, go to SuperMediaStore or Rima and get Taiyo Yuden
http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-...

http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=...

and .. if your 'backups' are freezing/skipping, I'd redo them off of the original discs ...

The poor quality backups will be tougher to re-rip. Too many errors or errors in the wrong spot and you'll get crc errors. You could try ripping them back to hard drive using Dvd decryper in Mode ISO read and write.DVD Decrypter is a more aggressive ripper. It's a simple program using the ISO mode.

You will probably have to rip the originals again on some of them if those crc errors stop you from the backup copies.

It all comes down to those little errors on your backups.Again-the best reason to use high quality media and a sensible 4x/8x burn.Burner quality will also contribute to those errors.

Majority of memosux media is made by poor quality manufacturers: Prodisc/cmags/probably some moser bauer? They have some good manufacturers like MCC-Mitsubishi chemical corp/ricohjpn/ and Ritek, but very slim chances of getting them. Very hard to tell which ones you get until you open up that spindle.

It depends on how you buy them.

On the web: Rima/meritline/americal/and supermediastore.com are good sites for taiyo yudens. You have to watch out for fakes, but those sites have the genuine taiyo yuden media.

Locally: You can get some great prices at Best Buy/staples/Office Depot. I look the outer labels over for Made in Japan. You can get some high quality tys this way on the Fuji/Sony/and Maxell brand names.Japanese maxells are made by Hitachi of Japan.
30 cents each or lower when on sale. They also carry verbatim with weekly specials.

Saugman

Where do you guys find the Made in Japan Discs. I was at Fry's today, and all the Maxell discs were made in Taiwan. Also I brought some Verbatims at Best Buy, and found that they were also made in Taiwan. I have ordered some taiyo yudens from supermediastore. Will those be made in Japan?
Thanks

I haven't purchased any maxell media for a while, just full hub inkjet printables.

Office depot runs a sale about once a month. They will have both japanese and taiwanese spindles. If you want some great quality ritek media, the Office depot brand 8x speed are made by ritek, the same manufacturer for majority of Maxell taiwanese media.A big sale is on this week for 25 cents each.

Staple's haven't had a sale on them in a long time, but I did pick up 300 of the sony +8x yudens last week there.

Walmart is another good site, not price wise, but they'll match other store ads when they have them on sale.

Kmart: They have a sale this week on fuji 25 packs.Like most other stores, they may have some of the tys in the japanese spindles.

Office Max and Best buy may also carry maxells.

Your alright with those taiwanese verbs. Majority of them are Mitsubishi chemical corp. Singapore and India also produce some of their media. Ty is also showing up in some of them as well.

Supermediastore.com is a very good site. The dash format is a lot cheaper on those sites than the plus. You'll be OK with them. I booktype the plus format to dvd-rom,so I no longer mess with the dash format.
