The simple answer: Buy a new hard-drive. Disk space is cheap nowadays and if you're going to be encoding movies the I'd suggest getting a good sized hard-drive.

Yes a HD is probably the answer. Does your pc use SATA or PATA HDs.?
I just purchased a 300gig SATA HD for $125 from newegg.com
Do you have a DVD burner picked out yet ?
You can get DVD burners that do everything now, dvd ram, cd burning, DVD DL, DVD +R, DVD -R ...etc . You just have to be carefull which brand you get, about half of the burners on the market are junk.

How will i know which to buy:sata or pata? I tried to learn from HP:s www-pages but there i didnt get any wiser...does it have something to do with operating system? Iwas searching comparable HD in finnish www.verkkokauppa.fi and found 300Gb satas for around 150 ? (Seagate, Maxtor, Western digital...)-i cant do any difference... I downloaded Alcohol 120% and tried to burn DVD but i didnt realize i had to change the form with a converter first from DivX to mp3...and whatabout the subs-how to get them alltogether. This seems to an endless swamp!

Ah ha ha...yeah *sigh* it can seem overwhelming at first. There's quite the learning curve at first, but the gobble-de-goop does eventually make sense :) Promise.

As for your questions:

1) Right now there are two mainstream types of connections your hard-drive can connect to your computer with: Serial Advance Technology Architecture (SATA) and Parallel Advance Technology Architecture(PATA). The difference is how they transfer data along the lines. SATA sends it serially and PATA sends it parallel-ly (if that's a word :-S ).

Now what does that mean about anything? Well first off the connectors are different. One's a massively thick cord (PATA) and the other is a small thin (pretty I think) wire. And the BIGGEST difference is in the speeds. PATA can be anywhere from 66MB/s to 133MB/s. SATA I maxes out at 150MB/s and SATA II maxes out at 300MB/s.

More detailed info here: http://www.hardware.com.my/hard-disks/sata-vs-ata.html

2) What one to buy? That depends on what your motherboard is capable of. If you can find the model number, you can look up the spec sheet and find out whether it takes IDE (PATA or ATA...same thing), SATA, SATA II or a combination of the above. If you post your motherboard model number here we can cross reference it for you.

3) As for what to choose here's the scoop: PATA and SATA I are essentially the same speed if you get a 133MB/s PATA drive. So if your computer is SATA I capable then you can get whatever is cheaper and you'll get roughly the same speed from either. If (and this would be great) your computer is SATA II enabled, then you will notice a significant difference if you get a SATA II hard drive.

4) As for the changing from .AVI (DivX) to a dvd type video, head to this forum. It's called MPEG-2 encoding, which is what you have to do if you want to convert from .AVI to DVD. But also...many new dvd players will play .AVI directly (will have a 'DivX' logo on front) and you don't have to convert them if you don't want to. So head there cause there's tons on video conversion:
