NEC's need to be flashed with hacked firmware inn order to be capable of booktyping DVD5 dvd+r's to dvd-rom. I believe there is some hacked f/w available by liggy's that will fix you up.

Your drive needs to intialize the disc to make sure it is possible with the media present 1st then your drive has to have the abilty to booktype. Slow typer I am Mort LOL

They do dl layer media, for sl you need hacked firmware. It works like a charm.

Second Mort's advice, go check out Liggy and Dee's page, most likely you will find a firmware that you like. That's where I updated my drive myself.

Nothing to it very simple.
The biggest advantage to booktyping +r media to dvd-rom would be if you share your backups with family and friends and want to be assured they have the greatest chance of being compatable with all their dvd players.
