Howdy all. I've been successfully burning DVD-R's (Memorex) for the past few months since I installed my Sony DRU-800A.
I just opened up a pack of TDK DVD+R 4.7 GB blanks and have experienced problems. At first, I thought maybe I hadn't removed copy protection or something, but now, every time I try to burn to one of these discs I get a coaster. I have a few Memorex DVD-R's left, and those still burn flawlessly (i.e. what I tried to burn on the DVD+R's fails, but on the DVD-R's it works perfectly).
I know that the TDK media is compatible with my burner because it says so on the Sony website. As I've said, the files I'm burning are working fine with my DVD-R's from Memorex. So I'm wondering if perhaps I have some kind of setting wrong. I'm using the Nero 6 SE with the latest upgrades, as well as the latest firmware (KY06) for the drive.
Am I not setting something correctly, or does anyone have an idea what can be done to solve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
2xJ

Do you have an error log? I would say ditch Memorex and TDK. You need to try Sony/Fujifilm (Made in Japan), Verbatim and Maxell. The other brands are usually low quality and probably will only store your movies for less than a year.

I find it very weird that your drive would love Memosux better than TDK which is a wayyyyyyyyy better media! Anyway....KCflyguy got it right about the media..... you should get quality media and it should solve your problem. Memorex is not a good brand.... check out this media guide: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm I suspect that you have the better Memorex (RICOHJPN--second class media which is ok....most Memorex is CMC MAG crap!) the TDK can be good or bad depending on the manufacturers ID (made in Japan are the better disk!) So get yourself better media and you'll find it works best! Taiyo Yuden is my favorite of choice, then Verbatim!

So you think it is the media then? Seems weird. I'm in the process of contacting TDK, I figured they would be a good brand...

TDK is well known for buying it's +r media from cmc magnetics (memorex is well known for this too). TDK and memorex are 2 of the most problem prone medias on the market. Run a TDK through this free little utility and let us know the manufacturer and media code. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Here are some media codes for TDK and memosux media.
TDK DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
TDK DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
TDK DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG.E01)
TDK DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPN R02)
Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (MBIPG101-R03-000)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x Printable (MCC-003-000)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (CMC MAG.W02)

Memorex DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG.....)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)

Mmm...I see that they are CMC disks. :grr:
I wonder if I can get a refund because of the "1 Year Warranty..."
Does anyone know of 100% reliable companies to buy discs from???

Most places will give you a refund even if you've tried up to 5 of the discs. If you are buying local look for verbatim (mostly made in taiwan but that is ok), sony, maxell or fuji (made in japan). If buying online look for verbatim (don't get the pearl whites) preferably datalifeplus's or taiyo yuden's. Good online shops are supermediastore.com, rima.com, meritline.com, or newegg.com. I buy most of my verbatim DVD+R hub printables from amazon.com and they have always been top notch MCC003's.

Thanks so much. I purchased a 50-pack of Verbatim's on sale at Office Max this past weekend, and everything is working flawlessly again.
Oh, and TDK told me I can send back the discs for a set of new ones.

i need a little help. i just tried to do a back up for the first time using dvdd and shrink. everything went well, until at the end when i tried to set the target as my orginal file (per scuba petes guide) my comp. kept telling me it was the same file as the source(which is what it is suppose to be...i guess?) and wouldn't let me say ok and start the backup.

You don't want the same file or folder for both sorce and target. You can either select your dvdrw drive as the target making sure the burn speed is no faster than 8x or make a new folder on your hdd as the target and then burn it later.
