Hello. I'm thinking about installing an H2O chip in my v12 slimline ps2. My question is, am I able to disable the mod-chip so I can play games online? And is the chip stable with good boot rate?

The H2O is a crap chip. Go with a better quality chip like the DMS 4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity, or Crystal Chip 1.1.
5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1. The DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader built into the flash and all the feature's you'd expect from a quality modchip, I recommend the DMS 4 SE Pro, because it has a 2MB flash built into the chip, and it's only about $10 more than the DMS 4 SE Lite. If you're interested in playing games off a HD, take a look at the DMS 4 Pro SE.
http://www.dms3.com/dms4se/features.html
The Matrix Infinity is the grandfather of auto boot modchips. It was the first modchip to auto boot backups/imports with no swapping/resetting. It's feature packed and simple to use. Matrix Chips are probably a little more durable than the other two, and extremely reliable. There are a lot of Matrix Infinity clones out there, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers listed in this thread.

The Crystal Chip 1.1 is the latest contender to graduate to the top flight chip category. It is feature packed, simple to use, and effective. The CC auto patches DNA ID's so you'd never need to bother with Windip, Winimage, or Disc ID Insertor. Definitely recommended if you play your backups online alot. To boot backups/imports the Crystal Chip requires the use of "hacked" firmware. It's simply the official firmware modified so the chip can boot backups and imports. Everyone who uses the CC uses the hacked firmware, so fear not. The only feature that the CC doesn't share with the other two chips is support for cheat devices like ARMAX or Game Shark.
http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2#31 CC 1.1 Hacked Firmware v.19: http://www.forumconsolas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1213
I personally have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. I have no regrets as to getting a modchip over Swap Magic. Once you have a quality modchip, you'll never go back to disc swapping again. It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like. If you haven't noticed, most people who have trouble getting games to boot are Swap Magic users. This isn't nearly as frequent a problem for people who have modchips. Just some food for thought.
Note: v.12-14 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.
From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:
If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12-V14 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.
Laser fix info: http://www.modchip.com/ps2/v12laserfix.htm
26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition http://www.modchip.com and http://www.norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable. http://www.Xmodds.com is another quality mod site. If you're interested in a premod or modchip, be sure to order from one of these high quality sites.

Thanks a lot Tokijin. One more question though. I'm planning on playing my games online. Does the infinity chip support that? I know the crystal chip you don't have to patch the game. But what about infinity?

Unfortunately the MI doesn't auto patch DNA's. Team Toxic (developer of the Toxic OS- the DMS 4 Pro SE's OS) has said they will not pursue the same auto DNA patching as the CC. If you got an MI, you would still have to patch DNA's. It's not hard, but it probably isn't something you want to do with every backup you intend to play online. I'll post some patching info and leave the rest up to you. The CC probably is the way to go if online play is important to you. That's my opinion.
20. Q. What are DNA's?
A. Any game made after 2003 for the PS2 that is online playable contains one or more image files that has a "disk
DNA checker." The online game server checks your game disk to see if it's the real thing or not. Thus, you have to discover which .img file on the game disc has the checker file.
21. Q. How do I patch DNA's?
A. http://www.ps2nfo.com/on-line.html
22. Q. Where can I find DNA ID's?
A. NTSC-US: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/198137 Updated NTSC DNA's thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/291526 PAL: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/199101C

Yeah I've thought about that before myself. All the searching I did indicates you can't play backups online. It says the chip can be disabled making it invisible for online play. I emailed the Matrix Team for some further conformation on this. I disabled my MI, and indeed it doesn't boot backups. I couldn't find a definitive answer on this. My guess would be that the purpose of DNA's patching is to fool the PS2 server's into thinking it's an original game. In fact that is widely known to be the purpose of DNA's patching. The question would be is there an online hardware check to see if your PS2 is modded. If yes, then I don't think it's possible to play backups online (a la Socom 2 or 3). However, because of the endless questions regarding DNA patching, I suspect that isn't the case, that patching the DNA's is sufficient for 99% of backups. I don't like speculating, I will check with a couple modders and see what I hear from the MI team. Cheers!

I've realized that Matrix Infinity is a great chip. Although, I still have a soft spot for online gaming therefore the CC 1.1 attracts me. As you recently mentioned, in order to go online you need to patch the games with Disc ID patches. If the MI can only support online play if the modchip is disabled for original games, then logically, you can't play backups of online games because they need the modchip enabled to boot the game. So really, with the MI you can't play online with a backup? You've also said that the MI It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like." So basically, I could play a PAL game on an NTSC machine and it wouldn't have that moving screen problem? Please, reply.

Thanks for clearing that up IluvPS2. I thought so, but I hate guessing. Yes you can play PAL games on an NTSC machine perfectly. I have a couple PS2 PAL backups including La Pucelle: Tactics, GUN, and Y's: The Ark of Naphisitim, and they all play perfectly after adjusting the the video mode in the firmware menu. It's definitely a nice feature to have. It's difficult to find the NTSC version of some games. Plus it plays PAL PSX games perfectly. I've got several of those as well.

Thanks a lot, Tokijin, and IluvPS2. You guys have a been a great help. Just out of curiosity, what chip do you mostly use IluvPS2? Also, what chip would you guys preferably recommend, MI or Crystal (as this is the hardest choice in my life)?

Well if patching DNA's isn't important, then go with the MI. The Crystal Chip doesn't support cheat devices like ARMAX or Game Shark. It's a good chip, but it's not quite in the same class as the DMS 4 Pro SE or MI. If you get the MI, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers on the list, there are a ton of MI clones out there.

One more question for you Tokijin referring to your F.A.Q. How do I possibly run SNES games on my slimling V12 (SCPH 70011). I've read a long time ago that you can't store files on your memory card for the slim, because I tried the independnce exploit. The instructions on the site were just how to burn the CD. If its possible to play SNES games on PS2, you've made my day. Reply, soon as possible.
