what is a good program (free or not) to use to convert music cds into mp3's?

EAC (exact audio copy) is hands down the best ripper there is. It has been the standard ripper pros have used for years. It uses extensive error correction and drive control to ensure a 100% accurate rip. When combined with the LAME mp3 encoder plugin using VBR (variable bitrate) settings, you will get the best quality you can from mp3s. We have a guide here on how to setup and use EAC:
