Full-sized VS mini?

Hello everyone!
Apologies if this has been posted before, just had a question in this regard.
I've seen scattered about, on various forums, the idea that using the full sized DVD media causes the laser to have to work harder and the motor having to spin the DVD faster or something to that effect.
Is there any truth to this? I use both types of media just depending on what I can get my hands on and I have a hard time believing that people would be going through the trouble to modify the gamecube to accept this media if it was just gonna blow up in our faces.

It has no effect on the laser, but the idea is that since the disc is bigger it will decrease the motor's lifespan. Unless you play for 3,000+ hours a year on your GC consistently, I wouldn't worry about it.

at what rate does the gc's motor spin at. I was wondering if the gc didn't have a sense of how fast the motor is spinning, meaning it was standarized by the amount of power it has available, wouldn't it cause more dres since it will spin slower with the same amount of power?
if the gc knew it was heavier, it would spin faster to accomodate the added weight of the full sized dvd and ya I would agree the motor will die faster.

i have to say it a good thory but really how much more does a full size dvd weight than n mini dvd? i dont think any one could test if it really makes any differance.

keep in mind the issue is inertia NOT weight and inertia goes up as a square of the radius (or something to that effect). What that means is the bigger disc requires more start up torque, which means the motor pulls more amps. Is it an issue? who knows? only time will tell...
I like mini's for some unknown reason :)

well i think time did tell for me, my motor in my cube died in the other topic i made asking what to do, well after my little LED experience the motor died and evn when i put that motor drive in another cube it didnt work and now the motor is dying fast, like before if i gave it a little flick it would go but now it tries but cant keep a constant speed , it slows down and stops... well now i just bought a pre owned cube for $60 and thats less than 1 game for the thing costs so if it was the full size dvds that did it i dont care as i would rather spend $60 on a new or should i say pre owned cube then forking out extra for the mini DVDs
well at least for me i can get one ritek DVD for 33cents and the cheapest mini is $2
so for me i have 57 backed up games multiply that by 2 if i had them all mini'd would be $114 where it is $ 18 for regular riteks and $60 for the harvest cube which is $78 all up lol u save money evn if it does screw the life of the motor up.

And then you throw in the price of a second, or even third gamecube, due to the motor wearing out.

um yea dick head thats the good part i just simply returned the cube putting the faulty DVD drive in it and said it died when i got home and i got another DVD unit to play with and with extended warranty for 10 more so basically i paid $70 for 2 DVD units and if the one i bought fuckes up with in 2 years i got a third for free claiming that on warranty, and the previous one that just died was old, im talking 2002 with canstant use, i would leave it on for weeks straight with out turning it off so it lasted about 4 years with tons of use so i aint complaining

Quick follow-up question.
Even with the case mod for bigger DVD media the Gamecube laser still will not be able to read past 1.4GB of data correct?
Was thinking of getting a pre-modded Qube with the case mod but if the only reason for the case mod is for the use of cheaper media then i'll pass(having a job is good :)). Assuming that is correct i guess i'll go ahead and buy a Panasonic Qube that plays DVD's and use the MaxPro drive method to play backups.

well i think it can read a little more than 1.4 something like 1.9 or 2 i think. i read someting to that effect. its not much more but more is more. Plus sometimes you might be somewhere that doesnt have good mini dvds.

I'm just curious, maybe someone else can shed light on this, but in reference to the statement by evlspcmk...
Why in the hell would you leave a gamecube on for weeks straight? Does the 10 seconds it takes to boot just destroy any hopes you had of having fun? Why not play it a few hours and turn it off? It's not exactly a PC.

I would be worried that I would damage the machine if left on for that long. I find it hard to believe the machines were made to be run like that.

yea i only left it on when my memory card kept getting corrupt so i couldnt save and really wanted to finish the game.

Unfortunately I've had the need to do this. My Gamecube powers its vga box. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but when other stuff needs to use my modded VGA box, it is. My roommate and others turn the GC on to power the box, then leave it on when they are done using whatever they are using, leading to the GC being left on for days at a time. I'm working on a way to fix this, but I'm beginning to notice the occasional DRE. Just in case the cube drive/laser does die, can anyone reccommend me a replacement site in advance? Thx.
