Ok so whenever i put a disc in, It spins for a while, then you hear this scraping noise.. So (because i have a flip top) i watched it with the flip top up and the disc when it spins looks on a slight angle. I turned it on without a disc, and i watched the laser, and it came up what seemed to be too far, it seemed as if a disc were in there the laser would have been touching it... I dont have a slim line so to my knowledge i cannot adjust the laser gears..

Also if i put a cd in it, just a blank cd, it doesnt scrape at all, but of course it doesnt use the laser because its a blank cd, so my theory is the laser is coming up too high and its scratching the discs.

Any help would be gladly appreciated,
Cheers.

hi you can adjust the laser height on the "older" ps2. behind the laser there is a white plastic cog mark this in the position it is in with a marker pen (to use as a refernce) then adjust the cog a click at a time (not sure if it is clockwise or counter clockwise) until it solves your problem. there is a guide here with some pictures - http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t285699.html
hope this helps

Hm, where the laser adjustment gear is, theres no white plastic, it looks as if it has been removed.. Theres just a tiny black knob there, and by tiny i mean hard to grab with tweezers.. I took some photos:

Go to that link and click the photo album "Ps2", theres 3 pics of where the plastic knob should be.

Note: In the background of one of the pictures theres what appears to be the plastic knob, it is actually the magnet that holds the disc in place.

Seems strange, but I had a similar experience and it turned out my drive door was ajar just a teeny tiny little bit..
make sure it's completely closed...
I started pressing on the door when I use my flip to just in case...
and I haven't had any other problems...

I just tested pressing the eject button with the cover on.. When it slides in and out it scraps against the side.. and The left side looks more pushed in than the right...

So my next question is, how would i go about straightening it?

Does your disc tray close completely? My brother's PS2 had the grinding noise for awhile and I noticed that the disc tray was not completely closing. I took the top off of the PS2, took the 2 tiny screws off that hold the top of the disc tray down and then adjusted. I made it so that it will completely close and now everything is fine. Try taking a look to see if your tray closes all the way in.

Just a long shot, but maybe it will help.

I'm 80% sure that it goes in all the way, i mean one side is in more then the other... When you have the cover off you can see it slide all the way and click in, although it goes in out and slow and scrapes the side a little..

I also noticed that when the disc spins, it looks as if its spinning on angle and not spinning straight the whole way around.. I also hear theres a way of adjusted the angle the disc goes in / spins...

Ok, I just tested a psone game... WORKS PERFECT!

So now im convinced the laser needs adjusting.. But how can i do that when the adjustment gear is a tiny tiny black knob instead of a big white plastic turning plate.

Edit: I just found this:

"what does a scratched laser sound like? or insufficient power to the laser?"

"Does the laser make CLICKING sounds when trying load a game, if yes then its on the way out. "

Just recently i spilt a little bit of lemonade on top of the ps2.. I didnt think much of it as it loaded ps2 games after that for about 2 days then this started happening... I guess a splash of lemonade must have hit the laser and now its ruined..

So my next question, how much is a scph 50002 PAL laser?
