Hi all - my first post, so here goes!
At the moment I am successfully copying files in .avi format on my hard drive to DVD-R discs, that will play in all my dvd players. The copying process however is quite lengthy at about 1.5 - 2hrs. I have a Nero suite of programs called "Nero start smart".
Questions:
The Nero suite seems to be changing the .avi files to something else, which is what I think is taking all the time. Is there a vay to burn the .avi files straight onto a DVD using my existing software? and secondly, I have heard you can even burn to a CD, which will play in a DVD player - is this true, and if so , how?
One of my DVD players supports DivX, which I am advised is a prerequisite for playing .avi DVDs. Hope all this makes sense to someone, because I am struggling.
Yours in anticipation.
Brighamy.

Hello Brighamy, welcome to AfterDawn.com.
You have a lot of choices on how to burn your DVDs.
It takes a long time because it converts to DVD before burning... It is normally worth the wait tough...
You can burn an AVI into a CD if you burn it as an SVCD, you can do that using Nero Express/Burning Rom.
If you make an ISO with your AVI file, you can just play it straight away in your player. Use the ISO/UDF function in Nero Burning Rom.
Here is a nice list of guides compiled my our fellow member BBMayo:

By the way which version of Nero are you running? Is it fully updated?

Thanks permiggs
As I said, I am using Nero start smart, which amongst others contains the following:
Nero burning rom se Ver 6.6.0.2
Nero express ver 6.6.0.2
Nero vision express 3 Ver 3.0.1.18
Am I up to date?

Thanks Gwendolin
Still a bit puzzled by the whole .AVI issue and DivX. If I have a stand alone player that supports DivX, and given that the file size is much smaller than DVD - can I somehow burn the .AVI files straight onto either a DVD-R or even a CD-r and then play them in the DivX supported player?
Please exuse me if this is a stupid question, but I am pretty much out of my depth here.
Thankyou in anticipation.
Brighamy.

As far as I am aware you can burn to DVD using this process and then ply in standalone player.

@Brighamy
If your DVD player supports DivX, I am assuming that you should be able to burn your DivX files onto a CD or DVD as data and be able to watch them. I have an Apex DVD player that supports Windows Media Files. I burned a data CD with some little mpegs and I had no problem watching them on my TV. If that works for you, it should be a quick process, with no conversion to DVD or other format.Please let me know if it works.
@permiggs
Do you feel a little "older" now, as a "senior":)? Doing a good job, lots of good advice.Thanx!

As far as i know, Alkohol's guide is as spot on as you can get it... Unless i'm adding subtitles to it, i use that method ALL THE TIME myself when handling AVI's...
@cyprusrom
Thank you sir! Older? Naaa, makes no difference to me being a junior, member or senior... The advices are the same, based on my little knowledge.

Cyprusrom,
You were correct. Copied files direct to a CD, and they play as sweet as a nut in the DivX supported player. Many thanks.
