Hello all you great people I'm wondering which are better for my set-up, or are they both comparable...I have a Sony DRU-710A burner with current firmware, and have been using the MIJ Sony DVD-R discs with 100 percent success until recently, I can't find those anymore, only the MIT Sonys which I was told not to use...

The office max sale of the Verbatim DVD-R's got my attention so I went over there and bought 200 of 'em...should I run back and grab more, or check out the compusa sony sale to see if I can get some MIJ Sonys for $14.99?

Thanks in advance for any advice to all :)

Either of those should be good. Out of curiosity, have you tried any DVD+R media? Your dvdrw drive is capable of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom making them compatable in more set top players than either dvd-r's or dvd+r's. Your sony is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1633S and you can use the lite-on booktype utility with your sony to automatically booktype your dvd+r's to dvd-rom.

Thanks for the reply Mort81! I have used some DVD+R Sonys when that's all they had...I thought I was supposed to be using the DVD-R discs because they would play in more set top players...

I don't know what you mean by the "lite-on" etc etc, I just know the basics about all this I think...

I set Nero 6 to booktype DVD-ROM with my DVD-R discs...is that not the same thing you're talking about?

If not please enlighten me :)
Thanks again

:EDIT: I forgot to mention, I also buy DVD-R discs because thats what my JVC DVD/VHS HD recorder calls for

You can only booktype dvd+r media not dvd-r media to dvd-rom. Even though you have booktype dvd-rom checked in nero you're not doing anything to those dvd-r's. Their booktype will always be dvd-r.

Try a few dvd+r's and leave booktype dvd-rom checked in nero and see if they play ok in your set top player. They should. Dvd-rom is what new pressed dvd's are. You can verify that your backups are dvd-rom with dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Run one of those burned dvd-r's through dvd identifier and it will show the booktype as dvd-r not dvd-rom. Then run a burned dvd+r with dvd-rom in nero checked and it should show booktype as dvd-rom.

Thanks so much for clearing that up!

Hey while you're here, can you take a look at this disc scan I did last night with one of the new Verbatim DVD-Rs I bought yesterday at office max...the scan basically stopped at 18 percent finished, 77 quality.

I always use DVD decrypter then burn with nero recode at 4X and no larger than 4360 MB...

Why does this backup suck so much? I'm trying another one right now at 8X to see if it makes any difference...I did watch the DVD last night that I made and it played fine except for one little glitch where the pixels broke up just a bit...

It gets worse: I scanned some of my sony MIJ backups (was using the MIJs before I bought the verbs, which all play fine) and they scanned out at around 50 percent disc quality!

What can I do to improve here? Does my burner suck??

Thanks bro

:EDIT:
Hey Mort, here's the 8X burn scan, and I realized that I was scanning too fast, so at 4X here's the outcome...is it OK do you think? Would I do better with +R media? They only had the -R verbs at office max...

Hey Mort, sorry to innundate you with all this, but here's my scan for the same DVD only at 4X burning speed this time...as you can see, the quality is 93 instead of 95, the PI failures are a little more and the PI errors are WAY more...

Which speed is best from these 2 scans, this one at 4X or the last scan at 8X?
Tanks again

Sorry not to get back sooner. I would consider both burns to be good and very acceptable. With good quality 8x media such as verbatim or taiyo yuden I think you will find that they will normally burn ok at their rated speed. I would never burn any faster than 8x though even on higher burn speed rated media. Looks good. Good luck.
