ok so i cant play it and when i even move my mouse over it task manager says that it causes explorer to use 99% of processor. i tried to delete it and it says its being used by a program. now i assumed this was a corrupted file because i didnt personally encode it. however a avi that i did make and i know for a fact that it was working started doing the same thing after i reformated my hard drive.
if anyone has any insight that would be great.

ntfs. the thing is though that the file was on an external hard drive. i reformated (for unrelated reasons) the drive in my laptop and then the other movie started having the same problems. GSpot recognizes the first and says i have the codec but freezes up for the second that just started having problems.

Try disabling MS's buggy thumbnail shell extension.
regsvr32.exe /u shmedia.dll

If it doesn't help
regsvr32.exe shmedia.dll
to restore it.

try this to get rid of the unwanted movie cut the movie and then open the recycle bin and paste if that is succesful then empty the recycle bin if that doesent work try again using safe mode to get there push F8 on your keyboard just before windows starts to load and repeat the above procedure make sure you run a virus and a Spyware scan on your system as some downloaded movies contain nasties
Finaly check you device manager in your control panel under system that all devices are functioning correctly in particular your USB as I asume your ext drive is USB 2 and that is only available in SP 1 and beter In XP and requires a spedial driver in 98
also check that windows has correctly installed your graphics card
