How do I rip 4.7gb DVDs?

I'm trying to backup some animation DVDs I bought for my kids. These DVDs aren't the normal 7gb but are generally 4~5gb. These DVDs play fine on my DVD player, and "DVD PLAYER" on my powerbook, but won't play using VLC, (whichi I thought could play anything!). I've tried to rip using MACTHERIPPER and the rip wouldn't play either.
The DVDs I'm trying to backup are the CG animations "ROBOTS" and "THE POLAR EXPRESS" .
Any ideas?

Try using DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter (both free programs) they will handle these movies.

DVD43 (free) or AnyDVD ($34) running in the background will also help.

or CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD will work also use this guide for all the programs mentioned
