Ok, this is something of a strange one. I've not tracked the whole issue down, but let me give you some history about my Console first.

First things first: Purchased Used.

When I first got it, I noticed that the system was reluctant to play any games. It would, but not regularly. Finally, after a time it siezed and stopped completely. At the time, considering it was used, I figured I had nothing to lose and opted to pop the case. In fact, it seemed to have been pulled before.

Opening the case (and being VERY careful not to accidentally kill the ribbon cables) I found nothing major amiss. Still I did some minor diagnostic work on it and found a possible problem. It seemed the tray wasn't retracting into the machine fully. Tightening up a few screws solved this problem. Putting a disc in, I found that it'd work.

This was about a month ago. Now, the Console has started to randomly hang. Some games, Like mercenaries and GTA San Andraes, It plays fine with no hesitation. Others, like Fatal Frame 3 (purchased new) it will try to play. Key word there is TRY. sometimes the game boots fine and plays great. Other times, it'll randomly hang. As an experiment, while playing one such game, I decided to use the five finger wrench on it.

Ok, truthly, I was ticked at it and I slapped the machine soundly over the top. This caused it to continue on it's merry way without much trouble for the rest of the gaming session. (I have it set vertically).

Since then, It's been a common thing to hear a strange whirring sound when some games start. Randomly, the system will either start the game fine, hang at startup with a black screen, continually give me the "Playstation" logo and then go back to the "explore memory card" screen, or sometimes start long enough to suddenly freeze and need rebooting.

I'm not beyond pulling the case open again and tweaking anything that needs done. Problem is I'd like a general idea what might be causing this before I get my hands dirty.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I wonder if it could be one of the worm gears again, or even my needing to clean the lens. If it's not those two, what does that leave?

Edit:

Forgot to add this. It's a "fat" PS2, which if I can get beyond the various minor issues, I plan to do some mod work on. Part of why I bought it used was the intent to modify it later.

Possible solutions --

1. Clean Lens.
(my ps2 slim used to hang..take ages to load games...a nice lens cleanup did the work)
2.Many backup discs bought aint burnt properly. 9 out of 10 cases..when ripped back to HDD and burnt back again (Add DNAS id patch nd NTFS Y fix patch if u need to now) at 1x burning speed makes the game work perfect.
3.If it had a problem with allmost all the games and had a sqeaky (Disc skip) sound..wouldve suggested a lens voltage workup.
4.If it has a modchip installed...try and find out if it's a latest mod..and if it uses BIOS features..try updating the Bios.

..i dont link like the drugs...but the drugs like me !!

I'll check the lens and see if it needs a clean. Also take a look at the chip already in it. I can't help but wonder if it may be a combination of the two (Mod chip and lens) issues making a rather nasty result.

Though, the more I think about it, the more it seems to make sense the lens would be dirty, given that it did work after my getting ticked with it. That, or I just scared it into submission. Many thanks.

Try cleaning the lense with a Q tip and rubbing alcohol.

74. Q. I turn on my PS2, the disc spins and makes a "clicking" sound. It says "disk read error" in my browser, what do I do?
A. This could be a sign your laser is dirty or scratched. Clean it with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol if you think it might be dirty, also be sure to check it for scratches. Fat PS2 v.1-11: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Guides/ps2diy/ Consult the links listed earlier in this thread for info. This could also be a sign your game is dirty or scratched. You can clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth or tissue. Only apply a couple drops of rubbing alcohol on the disc, 4 or so evenly spaced. You may want to use an eye dropper for this. Rub it with a lint free cloth or tissue in a non circular pattern until it's dry. Your other option is to buff out the surface scratches with on the disc with a "Game Doctor." I came across a $20 Memorex cleaning device at Wal-Mart which basically does the same thing. It worked wonders for my scratched Breaker Pro disc. The Game Doctor will set you back around $40. If the scratches are too deep, this won't make any difference. If you get the "clicking" sound with a backup, all these same things apply. Also MAKE SURE that your not using cheap media. Again check the links posted earlier in this FAQ. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341

I'm just gonna scrap it and get a new one monday. Maybe I can mess with this one later, but for now it's just going into my parts bin.
