Hi there,

When you buy media, the company name is not what you really be looking for.

What is the most important, is the MEDIA ID.

Media ID, is written on the media, and it identifies who produced it.

Check out this website: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

Let's take TDK for an example.

I have seen some TDK DVD-R 4x with a MEDIA ID: MCC... which are excellent.

Then some TDK DVD+R 4x with Media ID: CMC Mag. which is pure crapola :)

Some companies, have a range of awsome to elto crapola media.
So it's a gamble everytime you buy some.

Here's what *I* suggest, and I'm sure a lot of others will agree:

1- Taiyo Yuden (Media ID: TYG0x / YUDEN000T0x)

Average stores don't sell those off the shelf, but you can purchase them online.

2- Verbatim (Media ID: MCC 0xRG20)

3- Maxell (Made in Japan) (Media ID: MXL RG0x.... )

Now what to AVOID:
-------------------

Visit this site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Anything other than 1st Class Media

How to identify the Media ID of your media:
-------------------------------------------

Most burning software, will display the Media ID in the burn logs.

If you have not burned one yet, and want to identity the media, there are great tools to do it:

DVD Identifier
DvdInfoPro
VSO Inspector

Depending on what your burner supports, you can choose between DVD-R and DVD+R.

Older player might be more compatible with DVD-R but if your burner supports booktyping (Making a DVD+R look like a DVD-ROM) these are more compatible.

It's a personal choice !

Good Luck !

I avoid philips and tdk dvd media. Tons of cmags in them and you can get a hell of a lot better quality for same price and cheaper.

Office Max has 16x verbatim on sale: Spindle of 50 for $13.99 or $14.99-depending on your region here in USA.
BestBuy has verbatim 4x digital movie quality on sale: Spindle of 25 for $7.99

What format are you looking for fadedrs?

Where you located at?

I can get some fine taiyo yuden and hitachi media locally at: Staples,Best Buy, and Office Depot. You just got to look those labels over carefully for Made in Japan. Sony and Fuji in the 1x-8x speed can yield tys. The japanese maxells will yield Hitachi media.

Verbatim is also easily gotten locally. They are made in taiwan and singapore, but still are some of the best.

That is one aspect of why you should buy quality media. Here's some more:
1) Stand alone compatability and playability
2) Higher success rate for burning
3) Re-ripping backups later on down the road.
4) Longevity
5) Faster burn speed with more success

Your DVD-RW drive also figures in.
Some burners are also on the poor quality side. I've got 6 of them and know how all 3 of my benqs kick major butt vs the other burners: HP 640c/Khypermedia +8x/and I/O Magic 16x.

I got 3 benqs burning/that I/O magic drive sitting in a box,640c hp lightscribe just for scribing and reading, and khypermedia used as a reader only. This will also contribute to stand alone compatability.

There's a whole lot of factors to have 100% compatability rate for stand alone players.Darn near impossible, but I can get about 90-95% stand alone compatability rate.

What's your DVD-RW drive's brand name and model#?

Some models do favor one format or the other. My benq's definitely favor the plus format.
