Thanks for your response saugmon, at the moment i am trying DVDdecrypter/shrink after failing with anyDVD/shrink, i belive my coasters are from the speed of the drive and poor media, cant correct media at present, so i am trying slower speed, and just found it on decryper, i thought it was a hardware setting and it is a software setting ((hangs head), trying to back up "legend of zorro" have had problems with movie going into constant pauses, using HP 16x dvd, have either 40 coasters or 40 movies at slower speeds

I haven't done legend of zorro, but I've read a few posts on that one how DVD Shrink is having trouble with it.I just may have to pick it up tonight to find out.
HP 16x dvd? Is that your burner drive or blank media?
Constant pauses?
Is this while you view them on a stand alone player or while you view them on your pc?
You want to make sure your DVD-RW drive can play its own backups and they should look near original. Also test those backups in other stand alone players to see how they react to them.
Lots of other things can factor in to give those pausing issues. Here's the most usual culprits:
1) Media quality
2)burn speed-crap media has to be burned slower
3)Multi-tasking
4)Paper/sticker labels
5)Fragmented harddrive
6)Spyware/malware
7)stand alone player-may need a lens cleaning,last resort though.
8)Burner quality.
9)Burn engine
And the list goes on and on.
The answer to my question of what drive/s gives those issues will help narrow it down.

well finished Zorro and 1st the good......slower speed combined with the DVDecripter/shrink worked well, great sound and video on my dvd player, the bad...missing 1st 3 mins of movie, dont ask me how, possibly when i tried out the lead in change, might not of reset to zero
HP 16x is the media
stand alone...5 mins plays fine then pause 15-20 secs play pause 15-20 secs, i am sure this is the speed, and i now have found the setting in software and have reset to 4x
also i am going to stop multitasking while burning, you are the second person to mention that along with poor quality media, next batch of media will be better

You can also use Deep Analysis and AEC controls in DVD Shrink if using high compression. Using these options along with what saugmon suggested could put an end to the pausing, stuttering, pixellation and artifacts that you have described.

Is legend of zorro a columbia pictures release?
Some of those columbia pictures, when I re-author,get a little booggered up at the beginning. That's why on every columbia pictures releases,I cut out the beginning credits-until after the Lady Liberty Icon. No problems ever since.

Columbia/sony picture: Double whammy. Definitely have to use AnyDVD on that one.
Again, that lady liberty trademark has done some weird stuff if you reauthor. The grudge is one that comes to mind with playback issues and cutting out that trademark using dvd shrink's frame start/stop feature fixed that one.
I'm also skeptical of HP media. They use some crappy manufacturers in their 4x and 8x speed. Not sure who makes their 16x speed.Office Max has a sale this week, which is up after today. Verbatim 16x for $13.99-$14.99 depending on your region. These are excellent quality media and probably cheaper than those HP's you bought.
Can you get the MID code from those HP 16x discs?
Here's a free program to get that code:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...
Dvdinfopro/nero toolkit/and DVD Decrypter will also tell you that code. I'm curious to see who made them. I can't recall seeing a post of anybody using HP 16x media.

Here's the 4x and 8x manufacturers:
HP DVD+R 2.4x (CMC MAG.R01)
HP DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
HP DVD+R 4x (MCC.....002)
HP DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG.E01)
HP DVD+RW 4x (PHILIPS-041-000)
Lots of Crap Mag Corporation-CMC- media in there.
If they follow suit to the 16x speed, then probably cmags or philips?
Maybe lucky and get ritek or Ricoh?

rebelslol,
I think most would agree if I suggest you to burn at half the rated speed of your media to be on the safe side. Obviously you should be using quality media in the first place

Depends on the equipment and media. I could go along with 4x burns on 8x media, but 8x on 16x I'm not quite ready to agree on yet. I consistently burn at 6x and have no doubts I could burn successfully at 8, but one of my burners will write 12x on good 8x media. A person should use good judgment and do a little experimenting.
As for the media manufacturers for HP, the 4X was Mitsubishi MCC 002 and besides the CMC noted for 8x, they have Mitsubishi MCC 003. Mitsubishi is top of the line. If you call an association with CMC the "kiss of death", then start using Verbatim as skeet targets. Look for made in Japan on the label and if there, the contents of the HP are more than likely the MCC.
"The Legend of Zorro" has the latest ARccOS and structural protections the "Factory" puts on DVDs. I did this one with a rip using AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter. The resulting rip was still not compliant enough to work with Rebuilder though it was analyzed through DVD Shrink as a quick test. I processed the ripped files through FixVTS, similar to VobBlanker, and that solved the problem. Getting a good clean and compliant source is the key to any backup, once you have that, just about any of the decent transcoders or encoders can finish the job. DVDFab Decrypter has been updated and has been working well on some of the new movies. You may want to give that one a try. Be sure to get the latest versions of DVDFab Decrypter or AnyDVD, both have been updated just recently.

You can use DVD Identifier or DVDInfoPro to check media manufacturers, both freeware. Apps such as Nero can ID media as well. It's a good idea to check what one has when they buy a new batch.

You gotta take that digitalfaq with a grain of salt. Things change and that chart wasn't exactly on to begin with. It is decent I guess. Besides the AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter, I should have mentioned that the free DVDFab Decrypter has been ripping some of the recent releases as well. That's the ripper portion of DVDFab Express. Among other things, I have the DVDFab Platinum which includes Express and Gold. If I started noting the software in my library, some would say I was bragging, so I won't. ;)
So, DVD Decrypter using the PgcEdit system, AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter, and DVDFab Decrypter have been good means of doing the recent ARccOS protected DVDs.

Ahhhhhhh Brobear...... I contacted DigitalFAQ and asked that very same question (how reliable is their media guide?). The person who contacted me, by email, told me that they get disks directly from the manufacturers and from stores, also! They have a staff that constantly tests the disk, according to this person, tests are done very frequently. And I can't find any other list that is compareable. If you have one please show me! It's only a guide and it's one that is the most detailed..... but at the same time I don't hold it as gospel! It's just a guide and it does get the manufacturers upset, too. DigitalFAQ will not be swayed by angry manufacturers, at least that's what this person said to me in correspondence. I found it fasinating. What it takes to put out a list like that.
also I have the origial emails if you'd like to see them!

Aaaahhh IHoe...
I'll just start with the Sony on that list. I won't disagree with a top rating, but how about listing it for what it is. The Sony made by Sony is a Taiwan product, the Japanese +R is Taiyo Yuden. Sony has more than just -R and -RW. Fuji is similar and part of the product line in +R has been Taiyo Yuden. Much of the -R and -RW Fuji has been Pioneer and MCC. And from personal experience with using a few hundred Ricoh discs, I can tell you they got those in the wrong spot. Plus Ricoh has produced media for the top brands, including Verbatiim. IF you want to do some cross referencing, try this website. http://www.mediamatch.de/detaildvd.php?ID=1564 They're behind the times, but it shows the last generation of media for most brands and a bit of the new stuff. Most of us are still using the 8x, I've not seen much of the 16x on the shelves yet. But as I said, the guys at digitalfaq may be proud of their testing, but the way they present it is a bit lacking. If they wanted to do something really useful, they could set up a database with brands and manufacturers in a cross reference format, much as MediaMatch has theirs. If MediaMatch would stay up to date, their format is the best I've seen. http://www.mediamatch.de/detaildvd.php?ID=1564
Here's a screenshot of the digitalfaq guide we were talking about, so the others know what the discussion is about.

Neither recording speed nor media, but thanks for the input anyway. A lot of people have had problems with the protection on "The Legend of Zorro" DVD. AnyDVD is top notch, but better can be had over the CloneDVD 2, but if you're happy with it, that's what counts.
