my ps2 is about 2 years old I installed a modem and it worked fine till i left it alone for a month or so today i tried to play a newly bought game (area 51 ) and 99 out of 100 tries to load a disk it says disk read error so i decided to pull it apart (with the help of a guide made by someone much wiser than me)when i did and turned it on i found that it wasn't the electronic eye but an actual hardware problem the disc will not spin can someone post back or e-mail me with a list of the things that could possibly be wrong with my ps2 and if you know how to fix it that would be helpful to.
will be grateful for some help

The reason it's doing that is because your laser is either worn out or dirty. Try cleaning it or adjusting it

Watch the caps. If the disc doesn't even spin, you need to take it to a pro and see what they say.

I recently had the same problem except mine was with a sony dvd player. It had happened b4 and i sent it in. Now, my warranty is up so I need to find out how to fix it as well. When I come up with something. I'll post it here. Cant afford right now to take it to a pro ( not even worth it anymore). Looking for a pro for some advice. If anyone has already fixed a similiar problem please post how you did so. I am currently out of a dvd player and on sick leave. Boredom is driving me crazy.

Well his problem is quite different, a DVD Player is a far cry from the PS2. If money is tight Draven, I empathize. I'm an unemployed college student, I have no money either. If the disc doesn't spin, it could be laser/mobo problem. That isn't uncommon after 5 years. I've lucked out with my v.4 PS2. Your best option is to take it to a pro.

I have taken it to a pro before when the same problem had happened b4. They had to realign the laser. Taken it to a pro is not an option. And its not so much about the money as I would like to salvage my dvd player. If someone knows how to do so, please leave a comment or a link. As far as the ps2 goes, I remember I had to do a search and found a link that tells you how to realign the ps2 laser. Unfortunately, The fix is only temporary. It last about 6 months. If I find the link again I will post it on here.

just so you know "its not the laser the disc does not spin" alot of the time if the disc is not spinning it is because the laser is bad. so you cannot rule out the chance that the laser is bad. and since your not the pro and your looking for advice take it and dint get an attitude. and just a side note, i am not a pro from a longshot but my v12 had a laser go bad, and guess what. the disc didnt i repeat DIDNT spin until i replaced the laser.

JUST HAD THE SAME PROBLEM MATE ADJUSTED THE LASER AND IT WORKED STARTED SPINNING AGAIN
