Alright, so I've decided that instead of a flip-top and a swap magic disk, I'd rather future-proof myself and go all out for a mod chip.

I have a 300001 model PS2 (one of the fattys), and while it needs lens cleaning every year or so and the rumble function doesn't work correctly, it's still kicking and I'd be comfortable modding it. I don't know how to solder or anything, but I'm willing to learn before taking on a (possibly) touchy task at hand.

Ok, here are the specifics for what I need.

I need something to

*Play legitimate Japanese Import PS2 games
*Play legitimate Japanese Import PSOne games (if possible?)
*Be Mildly inexpensive
*NOT require swapping of any kind

I just have about five or so Japanese PSOne/Two games that I would really like to play. I don't ever go online (I dont like socom or FFXI), so I guess it won't have to be stealthy.

I found one card, the Duo 2 GT, which is very cheap and seems to be bare bones. Is it a good chip? I'm feeling around in the dark.

Thanks to all the replies, this is a great forum!

5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1. The DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader built into the flash and all the feature's you'd expect from a quality modchip, I recommend the DMS 4 SE Pro, because it has a 2MB flash built into the chip, and it's only about $10 more than the DMS 4 SE Lite. If you're interested in playing games off a HD, take a look at the DMS 4 Pro SE.
http://www.dms3.com/dms4se/features.html

The Matrix Infinity is the grandfather of auto boot modchips. It was the first modchip to auto boot backups/imports with no swapping/resetting. It's feature packed and simple to use. Matrix Chips are probably a little more durable than the other two, and extremely reliable. There are a lot of Matrix Infinity clones out there, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers listed in this thread.

The Crystal Chip 1.1 is the latest contender to graduate to the top flight chip category. It is feature packed, simple to use, and effective. The CC auto patches DNA ID's so you'd never need to bother with Windip, Winimage, or Disc ID Insertor. Definitely recommended if you play your backups online alot. To boot backups/imports the Crystal Chip requires the use of "hacked" firmware. It's simply the official firmware modified so the chip can boot backups and imports. Everyone who uses the CC uses the hacked firmware, so fear not. The only feature that the CC doesn't share with the other two chips is support for cheat devices like ARMAX or Game Shark.

I personally have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. I have no regrets as to getting a modchip over Swap Magic. Once you have a quality modchip, you'll never go back to disc swapping again. It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like. If you haven't noticed, most people who have trouble getting games to boot are Swap Magic users. This isn't nearly as frequent a problem for people who have modchips. Just some food for thought.

Note: v.12 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.

From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:

If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline v. 12 PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.

26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition http://www.modchip.com and http://www.norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable. http://www.Xmodds.com is another quality mod site. If you're interested in a premod or modchip, be sure to order from one of these high quality sites.

I think I'm going with the Duo 2 GT, after some thought. are there any easy to use guides on the net that detail the ps2 soldering process?

The Duo2GT doesn't direct boot everything and doesn't support multi disc games. Pay a little more and get one of the chips I mentioned. The DMS 4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity, and Crystal Chip 1.1 are all good chips. It's your decision, but it'd be silly to half ass getting a good modchip.

lemme see here, what does xmodds say...

# Supports V1-V10 PS2
# PSX1 Backup Media Direct Boot.
# PSX1 Import Original Media Direct Boot.
# PSX1 Domestic Original Direct Boot.
# PSX1 Gs with codes work for your cheaters!
# PSX2 Backups both CD/DVD Format Media direct boot.
# PSX2 Import Original CD/DVD/DVD9 Format Media Direct Boot.
# PSX2 Domestic Original CD/DVD Format Media Direct Boot.
# PSX2 Gs2 with codes work for you cheaters!
# DVD Movies NO FREEZING!

Am I missing anything important? It seems to do enough...if it doesn't explicitly say that it can play multi disk games, does that mean it absolutely wont? I need to justify spending more than twice what I was planning to.

Also, in the event that a year or so down the road i want a different one, would it be possible to desolder the existing mod chip and put a new one on?

thanks for the replies guys.

Another question, when working with these chips and soldering, do you work with the top side of the motherboard or underneith? are there any picture guides to this process?

I checked with a couple modders including Xmodds, it does not support multi disc games. Strangely the chip it's based on, the Duo2SE, does. I recommend you spend a little more on a top of the line chip. The choice is yours. I can't give soldering advice, I paid a pro to install a MI in my v.4 PS2.

most fat consoles are both side soldered. you can remove a chip and add a different if you so choose to do so, but as suggested go with a better chip now, you'll be glad you did.

If you have the extra cash get one of the 3 that was mentioned by Tokijin, you can always upgrade them if a new protection of some sort should come out and they are all great chips.
