pc dvd-rom to a ps2?

is it compleatly impossible to connect a pc dvd-rom to a ps2?
i mean i don't want to pay for those over priced laser heads anymore
i've been thinking this for a while but i didn't find anything about this topic
is it just impossible?
is the hardware of the ps2 and pc just too different?

or is it theoreticaly possible and noone just sucseeded yet?

it's been done via the IDE connection of the network adapter (with cable extentions) but the programming of the drivers was unreliable and caused problems with data transfer.
