I have read many a post about the quality of media. For this reason, I purchase what works for me -- Verbatim and Fuji. This latest batch of 50 DVD-R Fuji seems to be all bad. Have used Nero 6, Shrink, and CloneDVD2 -- can't write to media. It's either 'illegal disc' or something similar. There are no firmware updates for my burner (SOny DW-D22A) and it has worked A1 till this last batch of discs. Are the discs all really bad? Here's what DVDInfPro says:

I can't comment on those Ritek, since I've stopped using them nearly 2 years ago. I know they're decent/good media, but again, the only 3 disc brands that I used now are: (1) Taiyo Yuden, (2) Verbatim "advanced azo or datalife plus" and (3) Maxell (made in japan by Hitachi Corp.)

However, the choice is yours. Good luck with your next burn.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

Are you sure your burner supports -R format? Some of the older burners, especially from DELL only support +R format.

The 8X +R Fuji were Taiyo Yuden, check for Made in Japan on the label. The Sony 8X +R MIJ are Taiyo Yuden as well. With Sony I can say from personal experience that the 8X +R made in Taiwan is a good product as well. Ritek has been known to produce good media, but on occasion they've had problems. You can run a test on the media with an app like CD-DVD Speed in Nero or the DVDInfoPro. The easy test here is to get some different (good) media and see if it works. If not, you haven't wasted anything, you'll still be able to use the new DVDs later if that's not the problem. If they work, problem solved and time to go with different media.

Thanks, Brobear. Putting the manufacturer (RITEK) aside, what you're saying is that my writer doesn't recognize 16x speed discs. I'll put them aside until I get a new writer or Sony provides a firmware update. Thanks for your help.

Using newer media on an older drive can present firmware issues as the firmware is what sets the write strategy. I'm just saying to try some name brand 8x to see if the media you're using is the problem. Easy check and even if not the problem, you can still use the media.

I would just like to say that in My opinion, Ritek R03s are better than the Sony DVD+R "made in Taiwan" and Verbatim "made in Taiwan" (MCC-002....).

Both the Sony and Verbatim scan better than the Riteks, but the Riteks are compatible with more of the DVDs players I tested them with and have smoother playback.

The Sony Discs have a pixelated frame every 30 seconds or so with a few players, but the Riteks do not. Also, the Riteks can be read by my Very Old Samsung DVD-611, but they are not flawless. The only discs that work flawless on this player are my Taiyo Yuden DVD+R. Both Sony and Verbatim cannot be read at all by this player.

Basically, I would not recommend anything made in Taiwan unless if it is dirt cheap (I bought the Riteks at 3 cents a disc!!!).

Since the Sony 8x +R made in Japan are Taiyo Yuden, I find that statement a bit strange. Since they're the same disc with a different label (you can check with Nero tools or DVDInfoPro) I'm surprised the label makes that much difference to the player. The top end Verbatim are usually TY and MCC, so the TYs should at least play. I have an old Samsung DVD 611 and it will play most any DVD ROM, +R or -R I've put in it. You may want to have the player checked out. By the way, the Samsung until just recently was connected to my 60 inch TV, I would have noticed problems at that magnification.

From personal experience burning a few hundred from different batches and brands, the Ricoh from Taiwan is top quality. Both in compatibility and scan tests for quality. Many of the top brands sell them as their top line +R offering. Also, the Sony made in Taiwan is an excellent product, you'll find Sony on the top lists of many forums, including digitalfaq whick maintains a media guide. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
