I am new to the dvd burning business. But I used dvd shrink to rip dvds successfully. The problem I am having is when I try to BURN the ISO file, I get a "cyclic redundancy error." what can be causing this? Like I said I ripped the dvd fine with dvdshrink, I only get the error message when I try to actually burn the ISO file. I tried to burn it using NERO and dvdDecrypter and they both give me the same message. help would be appreciated.

A cyclic redundancy error normally means the DVD you are attempting to copy FROM is either dirty, scratched or damaged in some manner.
What brand of media are you attempting to burn to? If it's a cheap and nasty generic brand or one made by CMC (Crappy Media Company) that may be why.
What version of Nero are you using? V7 still has a fair few bugs in it.
Try a different media brand, that may fix the problem, and it's recommended that you don't attempt to burn any faster than 8X, with 4X being most favoured.

Also check and make sure that the firmware on your burner is up to date. You can use the Nero Info Tool to check the make/model and current firmware version.
Then go to this site and see if your firmware is current

I read up on the "dirty disc" but all my discs are new and obviously it cant be the dirty disc syndrome because like I said I "ripped" the VOB files successfully using dvdshrink, its just when burning it doesnt even get to 1% and it gives me the cyclic redundancy error. I am using TDK DVDR. Any other suggestions?

Have you watched the movie on your computer to make sure it's OK?
TRY a different brand/batch of DVDs, just because you are using new ones (and doesn't everyone use a new DVD? you can only use a DVDR once) doesn't mean that they aren't faulty in some way. It does happen.
Then try to burn something else, that will help you to ascertain if it is a burner problem or if the problem lies elsewhere.

My burners work just fine but my firmware could be updated. Should I update or leave alone. I don't want to screw anything up so leave as is or what's the bennefit of updating?

Firmware helps introduce your burner to new media and burn speed. If you are not having problems with it, then you don't need to update if you do not want to. If you start having problems with media or your burner then you can decide what you want to do. Just my two cents.

I agree arniebear, as I always say "If it ain't stuffed, don't fix it"
My LG burner's firmware is two updates behind - as I am not yet experiencing any problems I haven't bothered doing anything about it.

Try to have DVD Shrink create a VIDEO_TS file instead of ISO, then burn with Nero and see if you'll get a different result this time. If the problem persist, then it's either the media you're using or it's your burner that's going south.
