I got an error whch said that the torrent avi file
had a mixture of Pal/NTSC content.

I live in continental USA.

I selected 'yes' at the prompt which was the default
but I still got a bad burn-- my Sony player gave the
error message 'cannot play.'

But what I don't understand is how can there be both
kinds of content and what is the correct response?

Is it because the AVI is from a European/British source?

Hardware is:

Benq OEM 1620 -- current firmware
MachSpeed X-caliber mobo
512 mem
Celeron D 2.93GHz

The burn job recorded as a success but the disc could
not be read by my Sony player.

I use NVE a lot and whenever I strike this problem Nero advises that the file combines a mixture of PAL and NTSC and then goes on to ask which format I require, in my case I choose PAL and thats the format that Nero outputs.

Yes, I believe I see where I messed up.

Will try the job again later tonight.

I have followup question though.

When I ran this job this first time, my monitor
screen saver came on and froze up the job routine
from Nero.

I then turned off most of the things in the tray
from startup and also turned the monitor off and
just ran a clock timer so I knew when the burn job would
finish. Are there any other prep things I should
know to prevent bad jobs?

Dont multitask
Burn at a slow speed of around 4X
Use good quality media such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden
When choosing d/l look for DVDRip..better quality.

I have seen DVDRip.

What does that mean?

DVDRip means that the movie has been ripped from an actual DVD and put on the net, really good quality normally.

Ok,

Well back on the subject, I once again started the process
and it apparently ran ok for an hour ETC (estimated time of completion)
was around 2 hrs 23 mins. So I turned off the screen and settled
in for my usual dose of Star Trek on dvd. After a time I noticed
no disk activity and everything froze up-- the preview screen
went 'green' and the countdown continued to roll. If I had left it
completely unattended with a blank dvd in the tray, it likely
would have gone through the whole process and burned a dud.

What is going on with all this?

Can you post a log of your last failed burn so we can take a look at it.

Well, the good news is I apparently got one good AVI to DVD.

The bad news is that on the next try to reload Nero Express
the program would not load properly. The "island screen"
would not complete it's image and the program hung.

I even did a program upgrade to Nero Express 6.6.1.4
and the same result happened.

What would cause such a snafu?

I have my original system disk and can reinstall
from that but what is calling the problem?

Well, I went through the reinstall cycle again.

That means installing from cd.

Attempting to run the prog at that point gives an
error which says there are missing files and so to reinstall.

Deadended there, I rerun the upgrade obtained from Nero...
6.6.0.4, run that and I get the program back.

I tried to load the previous job that ran ok and got
that back.

But trying to retrieve the last job in that goup gives
an error that says the program can't continue and the only
'option' is to use the 'back' button.

The file is an AVI like the others, it displays its size
in the size bar but that's as far as it will go.

I don't see any end of file marker problems with it.

The screen freezes at that point and I have to control alt del
to get out of it and 'end task'.

If it's a file problem has this been corrected in newer
versions of Nero? Any updates that address just this Nero Vision
problem?

Well the only thing I learned during this error
was that you click the 'no' button. That means the
encode process makes it all NTSC and it will show it
in the upper left hand of the screen.

Your computer is likely playing the AVI in its
digital form rather than what the Sony stand alone
player needs.
