I did these at 8x burn speed on a HP lightscribe 740b nero7 and dvd shrink. the media I got at wal-mart they are maxell dvd-R it looks pretty good to me

Those Maxell DVD-R are most likely RITEK G05. Good Media. No doubt you got a good back-up with these. I use DVD+R mostly, but have used Maxell Gold Top DVD-R 8x blanks for back-ups & got very good results.
They scanned as RITEK G05.

Run It in your cd drive and you will get a different grade. My HP740i checks out to be 740b and it always gives a 100% but in the cd/dvd rom you get a real read.
