I don't recommend buying maxell dash format on the web. You can get tys from meritline/rima/and supermediastore in the dash format for that same price. Also a slim chance of getting cmags on the dash 8x media. If you can get the japanese spindles, these are Hitachi's MXL-rg03,taiwan,then usually Ritek-g05.

Now the plus8x maxells-that's too high price. I can usually find it cheaper locally on sale at office depot for $15 a spindle of 50. Japanese spindles of maxell +8x are Maxell-002-00 and made by hitachi. Taiwanese spindles are Ritek-R03 and are very good.

Got a local Office Depot? Their house brand 8x media is made by the same ritek corp, but a heck of a lot less when on sale. Usually 25 cents each, even special buy 1/get2 free promos that avg 20 cents each.

When it comes to maxell/sony/and fuji: Purchase them locally, when on sale at Office Max/Office Depot/Bestbuy/Kmart/.Look on the spindles for Made in Japan. I pay $15 max for spindles of 50 and they are taiyo yuden and hitachi manufactured. They also may carry Verbatim and they are top notch, easy to get media.

Buying on the net: Try the genuine taiyo yuden and verbatim on those net stores that I listed. The dash format is a lot cheaper for some reason.

hello saugmon,

Well, thanks for your response and advice. I already did place an order from super media store for 200 taiyo yuden for 65 shipped. I got the verbatim 8x from the new egg as well. The only reason for getting the maxell is really just for the heck of it or just to see hows the quality on different types of medias.
As for the sale in office depot, do you know approximately when are they going to have the maxell on sale again??

thanks
Yujen Huang

I just picked up a 50 disk spindle of Sony 8X +R MIJ at Circuit City for $14.99. They code as TY (YUDEN T002). The -R was on sale also but none were on the shelf at the time of my visit. This sale is not listed in their circular.

Thanks to "Bunnyrip" who pointed this out earlier in this thread.

Usually tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, or geeks.com have a special when you need them. It may be worth looking there before you drop 30-50 bucks on them when there not on sale. 50pack 16x DVD+R $21.99 + sh on Tigerdirect.com

Of course. TY is really expensive because it's one of, if not, the best you can find. I believe it was TDK, although there not the best, I find them to work better and more efficiently then some other brands, cough cough memorex.

ok so I decided to buy some MIT fuji's from best buy. turned out to be prodisc no surprise, but i was ready for the switch to retail store dvd's. i got the DVD+R's and now they're kind of weird. i didn't run any tests or anything, after i burn, video plays in the dvd player, and the disc is not recognized on any of my computers. hmm...what's up with that?

It might be because of my drive, but I doubt it, I tried both through Decrypter and Nero. Bitsetting isn't allowed in Nero and it fails in Decrypter. It doesn't really matter to me, I think I'll just return them. They're supposed to burn at 16X but they're only going at 4X. Oh well, at least now I know what not to buy, I think I'll grab some Verbs in exchange.

I am having no problems with the MIT Fujis and my Plexs, although my old NEC 1300a will not recognize the media even with the fw update.

I have a NEC in my desktop and a TSS Corp, which is supposedly a Samsung in my laptop. No luck anywhere.

TY is really expensive
Not true at all ... when the Fuji or Sony discs are on sale for $14.99/50 packs ... look for the made in Japan and you'll get Taiyo Yudens ...

and here you can get 100 for $23.99
http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-...

If you keep an eye out and shop the sales, Yudens are very resonably priced ... several days ago the -R 4x discs even had a $10 rebate ...

I agree with catfreak TY online are exactly and sometimes less then buying retail, at least for the shiny -R media. I have bought about 500 disks this way and not one coaster in the bunch.
