$25 bucks for a sony disk? wow, talk about expensive.
Just because sony throws their label on some blank disks don't make them good. They could of gotten a whole bunch of sub par media. They don't make the blank dvd's, they just buy them and put their label on them.
I'm not saying they are bad media, i can't, as i've never tried them, i'm just saying that just because they sony don't make them good.
I've been having no problems playing backups (no mod chip, no swap magic, just the good old fashioned mc exploit method), and i've been burning them on a Lite-on DVD drive (SOHW-1693S), not even it's latest firmware (been meaning to add one of the hacked firmwares), using Alcohol 120% (latest version), and some HP +R DVD's, they are 8x, but i set the burner to 6x (lowest) and it usually sets it back down to 3.2x (or it says it does, but doesn't seem to burn any slower).
Been working great for me. oh, i have a v7 Ps2.
and yes, my burner can change the bit settings, while Nero says that it does it, Alcohol 120% doesn't say anything about it, and i haven't found a switch for it, so i'm not sure if it's changing the bit setting or not.

Well I havent had any problems yet with my backups. Got NHL 07 and NBA Live 07 and they work both against the cpu and online. As for my Final Fantasy XII it works without any laggyness it doesnt lagg at all. I have the lite on drive built with my pc but I dont use it I use the Sony; and the Sony disc; their CD for PS1 and their DVD+ for PS2.

I burnt FFXII last night on the HP +R's i have, boots fine.
I know i have some games that don't work with cogswap, so i use cdloader on them. I've notice one of my boot disks (4.37gb DVD Robotech invasion) isn't recgonised as a valid disk under cdloader. But it works great under cogswap, with only 1 game not working (can't recall what it is, but it worked with cdloader)
hmm, repeated myself.
anyways, if the stuff worked before, and now isn't, maybe the dvd drives laser is going bad. Might need to adjust the pots.

Memorex is one of the crappiest medias to use. And Verbatim CD-R? You can't use CD's for these types of games that are over 700 MB's. Try getting Verbatim DVD-R's next time, they work flawlessly if you have the right burn speed & a good burner. 8x Verbatim DVD-R's work best for me.
