I was born the same year that Feynman got his Nobel for quantum electrodynamics. Is that irony?

What's Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits got to do with it? Is this your idea of screaming off at a tangent?

I've just had a thought.. Yeah, laff....

Using Nano-Tech, we could build MILLIONS of tiny, tiny machines with arms and Baseball-style catcher mitts, the mitts could be covered with that Organic Glue that Zebra Mussels use - that would trap loads of neutrons for sure.

perhaps if you wave a piece of flypaper around then you might catch some neutrinos. You could try to attract them with one of those insector-cutors. They would be well done though, barbequed more like.

A bit like when you leave a marshmallow for too long next to the camp fire.

That's not a fire that is camp, or even has doubts about it's sexuality. Not that matters of course. A fire can be whatever it wants. The freedom of choice is a wonderful thing.

Please MOVE AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD.

Very Kafka-esque, even tho' I disagree, as fire has its place and purpose in this reality - that kinda talk just burns me up!!

Are those tachyons related to the Klingons?

And yes they did use beagles for hunting but they were a crap shot because they could'nt see over the long grass!

This is my last comment on whatever the hell the subject was, before a moderator kicks me back down to a newbie, not far to fall i know but i bet it would take twice as long to climb back up again!

It's been fun, you'r all totally barking, and drchips you should know better (actually i am sure you do, trust me i am a doctor, haha) Night John boy, night.

Barking? Injupitably. It was indeed spiffing last night, haven't had fun like for ages!
Having a reasonable vocab & being old, coupled with the madness of a mongoose at the wedding of a coconut and a pineapple can prove to be jolly advantageous when situations like that materialise in front of ones' eyes.

I agree with drchips, if you think compressing 7 to 4.7 gb doesn't change the quality your're an idiot. It may look good but quality has been reduced. The quality is very good to begin with, so when compressed it will still appear to be good. Try compressing movies that are so high quality. Like movies from other countries, trust me you will see a change in the quality.

Think about it, if movies producers could get the same quality from DVD5 as they get from DVD9. Why would they fucken use DVD9 at all?

On little 28 inch TV's there seemes to be little or no quality decrease whether you use DVDXCOPY, DVD Shrink or any other reasonably functional software. But on my 65 inch HDTV there is definitely a loss of quality. I will agree that DVDXCOPY seems to have improved in the Platinum version, but I can still get quality that is just about as good and fit 2 movies onto a single DVD5 disc. Before anyone tells me this is not possible, let me explain: I usually back-up movies to DiVx format and set the file size to about 2GB. My DVD player will play MPEG4/DivX/XviD files directly.

Dear krool,
After following all the threads (and getting a head-ache), I must apologize for the way your simple question was answered past the 3rd or 4th response.

Is there a senior member out there that would like to address krool's question without a soapbox? I am interested in a seasoned opinion as well.

Whether you lose quality when you compress isn't a matter of opinion. It's a fact. Compression is achieved by removing bits from the video stream. If the bits aren't there, your DVD player can't show them. Whether you can tell that information has been removed from the video is the only real question, and to answer that you have to look at it for yourself. It depends on the complexity of the original material, the lenghth, the amount of compression required, the equipment the movie is viewed on, and the eyes of the viewer. With all those variables, nobody else can say what you will think of the end result.

You could think of it this way. Imagine trying to compress a book by taking letters out of some of the words. If you took 1 letter from 1 word on each page (less compression) you could probably read the entire book and not notice the difference, but you would end up with nearly the same number of pages. If you removed 1 letter from every word in the book (more compression) some words would change significantly and others would disappear completely, but it would reduce the number of pages significantly. When you compress a movie, you are removing information. Depending on all the factors I mentioned previously, you might not notice that the information is missing, but it is.

I'm sorry if you do not think that we haven't answered your question, but I think you will find that we did! All of the rest was purely for entertainment. You will only see a loss of picture quality if a- the compression is too high, b- you have a huge TV/monitor, c- if you have eyesight like a peregrine falcon. I think it is rather obvious that you will get quality loss. Anybody who says otherwise is only deluding themselves (or have cataracts). You will notice the difference in certain conditions. The permutations are endless. When you burn, all you are doing is transfering 0's & 1's. It depends on the amount and the ability for your system to read/burn (i.e. translate) all of the info. Some software can do this better than others, as does your hardware. your CPU is important, as is good memory, as is software etc.etc...Does this answer the question? If not do not hesitate in posting us again!!
