The Xbox One is not very consumer friendly, read the details here

article published on 21 May, 2013

Today during a special event, Microsoft unveiled their hotly anticipated Xbox One console, set for release by the end of the year. Rather than rehash what they unveiled, please read our earlier article here: Microsoft unveils Xbox One. What Microsoft did not reveal, was how unfriendly the console will be to the average consumer. So far, this is what we have learned about the Xbox ... [ read the full article ]

I think this is all just a tad overdone.

There are too many of 'us' to 'them', relax.

People said the same thing 10yrs ago about XP and it's reporting back (throw in a mic & a webcam to complete the paranoia).

Besides given what so many seem happy to share voluntarily on a host of sites so many seem not to care.
Actually it will have facial recognition and scan the room for you and people and could add that to their database and be mostly automated. The days where you need a physical person to sit and watch are long gone. It can gather and compute data on it's own. I do not like the information being said how it will see how many people are in your room watching a show and if you have too many it could report you or bill you for licensing costs. No actual people watching you live is necessary.

Riiiight.
So you think it's reasonable to bash Xbox One because a user might leave the cam/mic set-up going?
Like someone leving their web-cam on accidentally?

If you're implying that it would be difficult to know if it's off then I suggest your really reaching for things to knock it for.
Do you bash web-cams & PCs for the same reason?

Anyone who seriously imagines this likely can always, oh I don't know....unplug it when they're not actually using it (it's better for the environment & your energy bills).

...or, if you can't be bother but care that much, just put a bit of cloth over the camera lens?

Why do you feel it necessary to defend the Xbox One? We brought up legitimate concerns that many others have already discussed.

Instead of having to unplug it or put a cloth over the camera lens, why doesn't Microsoft just include an off switch? They don't because they want the camera and microphone on 24/7, ready and waiting for audio and visual commands.

Actually I'm not, more often than not I'm simply saying people are taking incredibly (laughably?) strong positions on the basis of old leak, rumour & conjecture.

Plus I'm just bored s**tless reading the same old same old when it comes to any Microsoft product (& more often than not when others do the exact same thing it gets excused without comment).

Good question...and one that ought to be being asked of the whole CE industry.
Why have 'standby' instead of off & a little battery?

Originally posted by bdaleypsu:

Possibly but I doubt it.
That's just your invented narrative - and if that is the case I'd bet the house Microsoft can't 'spy' on you - or anyone else - accidentally or otherwise look in on you anymore than someone can if you leave your webcam on.

But if you do leave it all on accidentally how is this any worse than webcams?

It seems far more reasonable to me to expect the 'off' button will be software to chop the connection (regardless of what the unit is doing in your home awaiting your commands), it'll be some sort of toggle button you push on a page or something automatic when you leave a game or part of the dashboard.
So if you do leave it on with a live connection the fault will be yours & you leaving an open live connection, nothing to do with Microsoft.
Just as it is if you leave a webcam connection open accidentally.

I'm simply happy to await the details of the facts & avoid the silly conjecture.

But you seem to know all about it, in your mind at least.

Again, my main concern is not Microsoft (or the Government) spying on an Xbox One owner - even though that is a possibility. My concern is that the product can launch programs, take actions, etc. based on visual and audio commands. That's what makes it worse than leaving a webcam on.

What with windows 8 and now this it seems Microsfots days at number 1 (pun intended) are numbered -literally...

I only needed to hear this so I am going for a PS4 now much more user friendly.

OK but the flip side of that is that some of us are very interested in gesture & voice control - and might just be able to operate it without having to cry about it if we accidentally leave it on.
Just like we do with webcams.

If you don't operate it properly (assuming the control system is not too complex & difficult...yeah, I know I know that's quite a huge leap, I mean it's only a CE product aimed at a hugely varying age range) then it's your fault if you leave it on/open.

Just like it is with webcams.

You must have missed the fact I pointed out earlier.
Yes I know PC sales are down at the moment (it happens periodically) but Win 8 has sold as well as Win 7 at this stage.

Plus they are said to be addressing the things people complain about the most in the coming update.

Hmm a company quickly responding to its customers, how awful.
What a bunch of corporate fascists.

Yeah, cos you know all about exactly where it stands with always on and used games...er, no you don't, you can't, they haven't spelt it all out in detail yet.

Just like people think they know all about Xbox One on these matters on the basis of old leaks & patchy or no info.

But maybe you had decided to go PS4 and never really were interested in the Xbox, hmmm?

Damn right: embarrassing for anyone on the other end watching me jerk off to my own system. After all if MS wants to watch us, we may as well show them EVERYTHING.
Yep, it will even respond to your hand movements. Offer up unsolicited pornography based on your "tastes":

"I noticed you like Grand Theft Auto Mysttic... would you like a strip tease or a virtual lap dance?"

I'll bet strict privacy laws are in place regarding automatic monitoring in private, and I'll bet the system in standby is really only geared to respond to you yelling "XBOX ON" in a voice like captain Kirk.

Remember Apple got into trouble tracking it's iPhony users whereabouts.

Of course the secret gov agencies will be able to circumvent the laws with a warrant naturally. It remains to be seen just how much it could do in standby mode. Perhaps it can record a rat boy stealing itself... thought about that? :)

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

How ill informed you are and quite presumptious as well.

Microsoft care absolutely nothing for their customers otherwise Windows 8 and Vista would not have been rushed out without a full test regime and customer feedback analysis - Which they obviously dont do!!! So its ok to release a bollox O.S. then tack on a service pack to fix it - really? Not how I was taught to design , test, write and release systems code dude!

No the guy interestx and his nonsense.
PC sales are down and its periodic - lol
Doesnt seem to take into consideration the size of Tablet sales and the company sales reports from Dell and HP as well as the stock movements, chinese hard drive reports etc etc etc
Lenovo are the only pc manufacturer showing a sales rise.

No hassle with your statements - yes Big brother is here!

Another fair & balanced (not) Oner anti-Microsoft/anti-Xbox comment.

I wonder where your similar comments are regarding Sony when it comes to their track record of telling their paying customers with broken PS3's to either pay ridiculously expensive repair fees or to just get lost?

At least Microsoft brought in a much better 3yrs warranty (covering several although admittedly not every & all issues).

Shame no-one else followed this lead & it it didn't become an industry standard.
Thankfully in the EU we have a 2yr warrantly on all CE products (and further under UK law, up to 6yrs in some cases).

Rather than just bash Microsoft people ought to be pressing all the manufacturers to introduce decent warranties.

The original Xbox 360 may well have been bad but YLOD proves a lot of PS3 owners have been having (expensive) problems too.

So let me get this straight...you are trying to compare a system with gamings #1 hardware failure rate EVER in history to something that was within industry standards? And you have the gall to try and call me out with THAT!? You sure sound like you're grasping at anything to try and come up with an excuse for MS...way to go and make your own "fair & balanced (not)" comment yourself.

You know what ~ you really shouldn't bother yourself with my opinions/views so deeply. Get over yourself already man. For YEARS I have had to deal with a small handful of people like you here on aD who even tried to go as far as make completely baseless claims that I "work" for Sony...when from where I sit it sure as hell looks like you are a plant for MS with all the excuses you lay out in TOTAL support of EVERYTHING Microsoft has done without nary a peep against their BS! In respect to not only the console gaming industry, but to what they have done and continue to do to their own customers (especially the core audience) ~ of which I might add who are completely LIVID everywhere with the most recent culmination of MS's utter failure of the Xbox One reveal. And I for one am LMFAO at the irony. So much so that it's almost sad...almost ;)

Well said oner.

I did think there are a couple of Msfot employees on here myself.
They dost protesteth toooooooo much!

Can you believe the sentence "a company responding to their customers"
I fell off my chair laughing.
If Msfot had listened to its customers then it wouldnt have brought out Vista or 8 so quickly.

I mean what's so damned difficult to stick to the topic and speak your business instead of singling me out and making/taking it personal. For what reason? I have a few answers as to maybe why...but it's sure as hell not worth it to explain/argue about.

omendata TY but please (for the best of all parties in here) leave it at that. I really don't actually think there are any employees (marketing or other wise) of any gaming companies here on aD. I'm just tired of all the heat I specifically get because the stuff I post is supported with fact that some just don't want to hear...especially when it comes true.

gotta agree with this, while i would never say that a decent amount of ps3 systems are undoubtedly dead now, its a 7 year old system after all. But there is a huge diff between the 360 FORCING MS to extend the warranty on such faulty hardware and hardware thats dying of age/use.
I dont see how people can make this comparison, we shouldnt be "pressing all the manufacturers to introduce decent warranties" we should be pressing them to make a quality product in the first place.

My personal favourite anti sony/blu ray poster of all time has to be hughjars, shame he got banned all those years ago, would be hilarious to see his views on why his beloved hd dvd isnt with us anymore and his justification for why Sony/ps3 havent crashed and burned.
