Bigjawn: You might want to try converting your video files to mpg or mp4. There are even some progs that let you adjust the actual bitrate of your videos.

hi,
i use a mac, could someone tell me a simple way to create my avi's to dvds? I tried toast and it took 12 hours and came out in poor quality (the people were squares isnt sharp at all). I thought if i convert it to mpg and then burn it 2 dvd will take like 4-5 hours and come out dvd quality (am i right)?

does anyone know how much quality difference it really makes if you use TMPGEnc to convert your avis to MPEG-2 and then author a DVD with them as opposed to just letting something like Sony DVD Architect encode the AVIs for you?

thanks

I think using TMPGEnc for encoding the AVI files will give you more quality and more options. I never used sony dvd architect but i had experience with Nero and i didn't like the encoding from AVI directly to dvd, it's better to pass by a program for encoding than after you have your mpeg2 files you can create your dvd.

Tmpgenc is very good, u have too mainconcept, they do the same job

TMPGEnc is very good but also very slow and, in my opinion. I would rate MainConcept definitely higher in speed and in quality.

yeah that's true TMPGEnc is slow compare to mainconcept, i think cuz in the options 2 past encoding is selected, u can change it if u want or have a look on the options.

sometimes i use mainconcept, it depend on the files.

I have one other question related to this. I make a DVD that goes with my school's yearbook and use Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere to edit video files on my computer, but I would like to have some of the kids create parts of the DVD at school without having to buy numerous licenses. Does anyone know how the quality that Windows Movie Maker produces avis compares to software such as pinnacle studio, adobe and vegas? I am not really concerned about advanced filters or anything, mainly just cutting, cropping and adding titles.
