pkman disconnects phone when starting???

Sorry newb here.

I have installed pkman, pktools, commander... drivers properly, the phone shows up in the modem dialogue and I can query it via usb cable. But as soon as I start one of the programs I hear that ding dong and the phone has been disconnected. Any ideas?

I have looked for a ptktools / man help page but can't find anything. Also I have the moto tools ver4.0 installed, can't use that either because I can't upgrade to ver 4.04b, I called them but seems I bought an illegal copy and they wont tell me how to manually upgrade.

Anyway any help would be great.
