I've been reading all of the threads about media, good and bad. And forgive me, I don't want to beat a dead horse. I definitely want to use top quality media and pay the little extra for it. However, I see all these thread about using certain media like Taiyo Yuden or Ritek... whatever. Basically who actually MAKES the media for the company. Is this just something you have to know when you buy it? Because I don't see any of that on ANY of the packaging. I only see where it's made. For instance, I hear FUJI is good. But I have noticed both Made in Japan and Made in Taiwan on FUJI packages. So, is one good and one bad?

@raywm3....... if you read all the threads then you should know this: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm this media guide is a good indication of what's good and what's not! Who actually makes the disks are the manufacturers ID. The stuff made in Japan are the better disks..... Made in Taiwan disks are good but IN MY OPINION IN MY OPINION! the better disks are the MIJs! After burning many disks I won't burn anything that isn't MIJ! But, to each their own...... use what works for you and enjoy!~

IN MY OPINION
I'm glad to see that was inserted. I noticed the digitalfaq media guide listed some Taiwan products as top grade. I've used a bunch of the Sony +R MIT and find it as good as the MIJ Sony made by Taiyo Yuden. As I mentioned elsewhere, Ricoh is a MIT product I've found to work well and they manufacture for many of the top brands. DigitalFAQ only gives them a grade 2. I've scanned them as well as used them from multiple batches and brands and they've been as good as the Sony's and TYs. TY also manufactures for Fuji, but Fuji has some MIT. On those I'd suggest the MIJ. There's been some good media coming from Taiwan, the problem is Taiwan produces so much media and a bunch of the bad media originating from there has ruined the MIT rep. Over all, the digitalfaq guide is fairly well on and better than no guide.

Get a copy of DVD Identifier to start IDing your media when you buy it. Watching the forums you can sometimes note patterns of what company manufactured certain media. When in doubt, it's safest to go by MIJ. I've noticed sometimes that's not an option and when ordering online, most often you don't get the manufacturer info.

How true, Brobear....but it's safe to say that the MIJ on the label can assure that you're getting quality! That's the way I look at it! and I'm not defending DigitalFAQ and it's media guide... I just use that as a means to an end!

Right on both counts and I'm not disagreeing with using a decent guide or with MIJ normally being a marker for good quality. I just have an aversion to "absolutes". Even I suggest using digtalfaq's guide; but as just that (a guide) and realize the market changes and they aren't 100% accurate. Plus there is good media from Taiwan. There a person simply needs to be aware of the market and not buy "no name" media or those with a bad track record. MIJ merely simplifies things for many.
