Hello everyone, got a really simple, quick questions for everyone.

I current have an LG GSA-4167B DVD+/-RW drive and it has the default firmware and settings, i use DVD Shrink, Nero Express, DVD43 and DVD Decrypter for ripping & burning and use DVD-R media with no problems at all.

I recently read up on DVD+R booktyping and was curious to see if i could do it with my drive. So i downloaded DVD Bitsetter and selected my DVD Writer and clicked on the check settings button and when it finished under both the options "Drive(DVD+R)" and "Drive(DVD+RW)" in the current settings box they both said "DVD-ROM" Now i've never set any booktype settings prior to this so i know i didn't mess with anything DVD+R/RW related or download/install any firware upgrades or hacks or anything.

Does this mean that my drive will automatically write to DVD+R/RW's with the DVD-ROM booktype setting without me having to change any settings? If so, i may start using DVD+R's because i heard booktyping DVD+R's is more compatible than DVD-R's with DVD Players.

You have to change it in software..Check the LG site they may have a utility program, like Liteon does that will allow you to change it. You can also do it in DVD Decrypter and burn with that instead of Nero, if you can get your hands on it. I not sure if you can download it anymore. I don't think you can do it with Nero Express, You may need full version like 6.6 or the new 7. I have Nero Express and have not figure out how to do it in that, but Decrypter does.

try burning one then check and see. u can use Nero, dvdidentifier,or dvdinfopro, just to name a few. by the way u need to keep ur firmware up to date, this helps keep ur write stratagey up to date for the new media.

This is one I will add to because I only use LG Burners. I have 3 GSA-4167B burners, nice burners. I CAN tell you that LG has No Utility for booktype setting. However, the firmware I have which is version DL12 DOES allow Nero to booktype Automatically to DVD-ROM by Default with DVD+R media. LG JUST released firmware DL13 with a few things in it like media codes. I ONLY get my firmware updates from LG & apply them "By the book". Specifically like LG recommends to the letter. Never have a problem.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

DVDInfoPro is a freeware app that can be used to set booktype, if the drive you have is capable. As mentioned programs such as Nero will set booktype and I noticed some of the DVDIdle apps will. Once set the drive should booktype automatically. Some software will let you choose +R and +R DL separately.

Booktyping to DVD ROM is a compatibility issue that not many people suffer from. DVD ROM is the universal format for DVD players. Theoretically, booktyping to DVD ROM means the recorded disk will play on all players. A lot of drives don't booktype and setting a booktype (if allowed in software) won't make a difference. Only some of the older drives and a few new ones will play only DVD ROM. Most players play at least + and -R and newer ones are handling multiple formats. As I mentioned, many burners don't booktype, so it's only a need if you have one of those players that won't play anything but DVD ROM. I've run into one such player in the past few years and it was a cheap promo unit (magazine subscription freebie). With the cost of burners nowadays, a person can buy a decent multi format player cheaper than buying a burner with booktyping. But if a burner has booktyping, no reason not to use it. I have one burner with and one burner without booktyping, and neither was purchased with booktyping as a criteria.

What little experience I have has shown -R and +R to be just as compatible with players as long as the formats are supported by the equipment. I have a lot of backups in +R and they've been no problem viewing.

I'm still learning myself, do you change the booktype before burning the movie or after?

Since the DVD ROM files are written to a DVD +R so a player recognizes the recorded DVD as a DVD ROM, it wouldn't do much good to set the burner to booktype after you burned. Set it and it should stay set. Just check before burning again to make sure. Setting booktype after the burn is sorta like closing the barn door after the horse has run away, it does no good (unless it's set for the next burn).
